Savannah River Site (SRS) • Site Scope and Activities • SRS Participation in the Department of Energy Consolidated Audit Program (DOECAP)
Savannah River Site Scope • SRS was established in the early 1950s • Primary mission to produce special nuclear materials (such as plutonium-239 and tritium) used in the production of nuclear materials • Five SNM-production reactors, along with support facilities to separate and purify reactor products, were constructed and operated until 1992. • At that point, waste management, environmental restoration, plutonium disposition, and decontamination and deactivation activities became the primary missions for SRS The SRS complex covers 198,344 acres, or 310 square miles, encompassing parts of Aiken, Barnwell and Allendale counties in South Carolina, bordering the Savannah River.
Current SRS Contractors and Partners • Savannah River Nuclear Solutions, LLC Management & Operations (M&O) Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) • Savannah River Remediation, LLC (URS) Liquid Waste Operations • Wackenhut Services Inc. • Shaw AREVA MOX Services • Parsons • US Forest Service – Savannah River • University of Georgia Research Foundation Savannah River Ecology Laboratory
SRS Recovery Act Projects • SRS received $1.6 billion under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) • SRS progress to date is approximately 80% of target • 3,669 recovery act jobs created on site • $383 million SRNS Recover Act contracts awarded • $260 million awarded to small businesses • Recovery Act Projects scheduled through September, 2011
SRS Recovery Act Projects Dome removal at Heavy Water Components Test Reactor (HWCTR) Waste is trucked to H Canyon for box remediation Concrete is placed for a drainage ditch at H-4 Basin, one of four areas constructed in the 1950s to receive wastewater from the Separations Area Processing Facilities. Evaporators will remove about 4.6 million gallons of water from the 105-P Reactor Disassembly Basin
Environmental Bioassay Lab Aids Japan • SRS Environmental Bioassay Laboratory (EBL) aided Japan by analyzing soil and air filters samples for contaminants related to Fukushima Daiichi reactor incident • Approximately 250 samples analyzed and approximately 500 analytical method determinations were reported • Samples taken mainly from farmland surrounding the Fukushima reactors or air monitoring samples collected at the U.S. Embassy and American military bases • USDA certificate acquired • Wide range of radionuclides analyzed – including Sr 89/90, gamma emitters, plutonium, uranium, americium, and curium isotopes • EBL is operated by SRNS
