Background • Last semester, IU announced a huge investment in online education • Regional campuses have been tasked to focus on graduate programs (although undergrad online work is “encouraged”) • At IUPUI, the Dean of each school was asked to produce a plan for supporting the initiative
SoS and the Online Initiative • Kathy Marrs was asked to create an SoS online education committee to produce this plan for the Dean. • Several departments within our school are interested in eventually participating, but the “first wave” of program deliverables is very aggressive (looking for June – August launches)
SoS First Wave Plan • SoS Online “Policy Guidelines” Document • Online minor from Psychology in Psychology of Health • Online Certificate of Applied Computing from CSCI (1) • Potential Certificate of Professional Development from CSCI (2)
Certificate of Applied Computing • Department focus here is on “production readiness” • Classes are “online”, but currently delivered as individual courses • We need to complete work to release them as a PROGRAM • Consistent user interface • Lecture “gaps” • Strong Oncourse curriculum envelope • Asynchronous and synchronous Instructor support through Oncourse Adobe Connect feature • and cPLTL synchronous support for lab instruction • Policy guidelines around the logistics of course offerings
Potential: Grad Certificate Professional Development • Stewardship for the 10K nationwide call to improve CS educational pipeline • Targets licensed K-12 teachers • Would be comprised of 18 or less credit hours • Focuses on domain content (Not how to teach) • Built around the CS10K envelope, may help position us favorably for NSF CE21 proposals • Uses current curricula: (N301, N201, N207, N241 as core) • Next steps: Kathy Marrs to explore idea with SofEd, and set up exploratory meeting with Math (who has a teacher program) • As this idea is fleshed out, we’ll keep the grad committee advised so that we follow a proper approval process
