Algebra 1 31 Jan 2012 WARM UP- THINK- 2 minutes silently PAIR- chat with a partner 1. Solve 10 + 5t = 40 + 3t a) t = 0 b) t = 10 c) t = 15 d) t = 20 Explain how you know you are correct 2. Write an equation to show the total amount of money saved for each week. Be sure to define your variables. Masha’s grandmother gives her $25 for her birthday. She decides to save the money and add $5 a week to the amount.
objectives Students will solve equations algebraically. Students will use think-pair-share and work in differentiated groups. Homework due TODAY pg. 278+: 6 a – b, 13 Homework due FRIDAY your handout
Just un-do it remember: additionUNDOESsubtraction subtractionUNDOESaddition multiplicationUNDOESdivision divisionUNDOESmultiplication AND order of operations (work left to right!) Parenthesis Exponents Multiply OR divide, working left to right Add OR subtract, working left to right
Use PEMA “backwards” to “undo” If you were “evaluating”, use PEMA 8 + 2x let x = 4 8 + 2(4) substitute– x is out, 4 is in 8 + 8 multiply 8 + 8 = 16 add When we “solve” equations we UNDO we use PEMA “in reverse” to find X
So, what’s first? SOLVING 2- Step Variable Equations You need to break up the equation into its two steps. Step 1: OR Step 2: OR
distributive property a(b + c) = ab + bc examples: 2(x +5) = 2x + 2(5) = 2x + 10 OR 2(x + 5) (x + 5) +(x + 5) = 2x + 10
WORDS to know: add examples/ sketch term- an algebraic expression that includes only multiplication or division between variables and constants like terms- have the same variable(s) raised to the same exponent(s) EXAMPLES LIKE TERMS: 2x, 5x, 6x, 10x, x, 100x WHY? NOT LIKE TERMS: 2x, 3, x2 why NOT???
what if there are variables on both sides of the equation? One method subtract the smallest term with a variable from both sides. Then you have a basic two –step. Solve as usual! Example: 10 + 5t = 40 + 3t -3t -3t 10 + 2t = 40 A basic two-step! -10 -10 2t = 30 ___ ___ 2 2 t = 15
Equations worksheetsUSE ALGEBRA! Move forward from where you are! Strategies- CODE your equations use colored pencils CIRCLE terms with variables (Mbags) Box numbers (LEAD) SHOW CLEARLY what you do to BOTH SIDES! Show all steps. CHECK your work– plug it in!!

debrief how do you solve equations using balancing? what was easy? what is still difficult?
