  1. How to change an improper fraction into a mixed number

  2. This is an improper or ‘top heavy’ fraction. 17 4 We want to show this as a mixed number. That means how many whole ones we have and how many bits left over.

  3. 17 4 =

  4. To change the improper fraction to a mixed number, use dividing: 17 4 = 4 remainder 1 Another way is counting up in 4s until you can’t go any higher: 4, 8, 12, 16...I can’t go to 20 because I only have 17, so that’s 4 4s and 1 left over.

  5. 4 whole ones and one quarter left over = 4 ⅟4 =

  6. 13 2 Practice question! into a mixed number 13 divided by 2 = 6 whole ones and 1 remainder = 6 ⅟2 13 2 (the denominator is still the same as the fractions you are working with, so the remainder goes over 2 if you are working with halves)
