Why Do Biologists Classify Organisms • Classification • Process of grouping things based on similarities • What characteristics were used to group the bees on pg. 15? • This makes studying organisms easier • Taxonomy • Scientific study of how organisms are classified
Binomial Nomenclature • Carolus Linnaeus, a Swedish botanist, devised a system of naming organisms • Binomial Nomenclature • A system of naming in which each organism is given a unique two part name • Scientific Name-made of 2 Latin words italicized • EX: Homo sapians, Canis lupus, Felisdomesticus • Genus-1stword • contain similar closely related organisms • Species- 2ndword • group of similar organisms that can mate with each other and produce fertile offspring
Levels of Classification • The more classification levels two organisms share, the more characteristics they have in common and the more closely related they are.
Taxonomic Keys • Useful tools that help determine the identity of organisms • Dichotomous Key • Consists of a series of paired statements that describe various characteristics of the organisms
Domains Bacteria and Archaea • Organisms are placed into domains based on cell type, their ability to make food, and the number of cells in their bodies • Bacteria and Archaea are both unicellular prokaryotes (prokaryotic) • This means they have no nucleus and no organelles • Archaea are found in extreme environments • Archaea are classified in their own domain because their DNA is very different from bacteria and they have a different cell structure
