A Democratic Republic in France • 1840s – Europe was economically affected by the potato famine of 1845 and 1846 in Ireland • Result: Outbreaks in Europe due to high food prices and unemployment • Corruption filled government led by incompetent leader Louis Phillippe led to a sense of injustice amongst middle class • February 22, 1848 – barricades were set up in France, throne given to grandson, but common people didn’t want a monarchy • Wanted provisional republic

A Democratic Republic Continued… • The first French Republic started drafting a constitution for Second Republic • Right to vote was extended to every adult male • French slaves were freed • No more death penalty • 10 hour work day was established • Division between revolutionaries • Moderate Republicans didn’t want any more radical measures • Radical Republicans committed to some type of socialism • Louis Blanc advocated for socialist system

Austrian Empire in 1848 • Liberals demand written constitutions, representative government, and civil liberties • Revolutions began in Hungary when nationalists demanded suffrage • Conservative forces gathered behind Ferdinand I and his nephew Francis Joseph • With help of Nicholas I of Russia, Francis Joseph crushed the revolution movement in 1849 and was crowned in December 1848

Prussia and the Frankfurt Assembly • Middle class Russian liberals tried to create a constitutional monarchy and unite German Confederation into a unified state • People wanted more than liberal constitution and a unified state even when Frederick William IV caved in to riots in Berlin • National Assembly met to write liberal constitution for united confederation • War ensued over battle for provinces • Austria supported by Russia; Forced Prussia to renounce schemes for reunification
