Characterizing Undeveloped Nations All nations are categorized as either or Developed Nations • Higher standards of living • Usually industrially driven economy • Low infant mortality rates • Longer life expectancy • High Per Capita GDP • Developing Nations • Relatively low standard of living • Utilize subsistence farming • Higher infant mortality rates • Shorter life expectancy • Low Per Capita GDP

  4. Characterizing Undeveloped Nations Standard of Living- the degree of wealth and material comfort available to a person or community.

  5. Characterizing Undeveloped Nations Industrialized economy- an economy which is mainly driven by technology and its back bone is based on manufacturing and production. Subsistence economy- a non-monetary economy which relies on natural resources to provide for basic needs, through hunting, gathering, and subsistence agriculture.

  6. Characterizing Undeveloped Nations Infant mortality rate- The estimate of the number of infant deaths for every 1,000 live births. (higher = more deaths, lower = fewer deaths) From this graph what can you hypothesize about the development of the world?

  9. Economic Development Since most nations of the world are still developing, its is ever so important that we ALL assist in helping them. (Specialization- Absolute & Comparative ADV) 3 Types of foreign aid (economically) • Economic Assistance- Loans, grants and $$ • Technological Assistance- Engineers, teachers and technicians to teach and improve technical skills. • Military Assistance- Troops, weapons, training etc.

  10. Economic Development Why help? Its in the best interest for developed nations to encourage international trade. However the most common reasons for providing foreign aid are… • Humanitarianism • Politics • Homeland Security

  11. 4 Obstacles Economic Growth • Attitudes and Beliefs- everybody just doesn’t get along • Continued Population Growth- this drives per capita GDP down thus rendering no significant changes. • Misuse of Resources- “I gave you a cookie for your sister but you ate it?” • Trade Restrictions- “I’d help but I’m not ok with your huge tarriffs!”
