The City Chapter 8.1
What is a city? • A city is an urban area with at least 5,000 people per square mile. • About 80% of Americans live in urban areas. • By 2025, 2/3 of the world’s population will live in cities.
Why cities? • Until about 1850, most people lived in villages and worked on farms or in mills or mines. • Modern machines and farming methods made less people needed to do the same jobs that were being done before. • Transportation also improved so that manufacturers didn’t need to locate next to the people. • As a result, people moved to urban areas. This is called urbanization.
There was, and is, a problem • The original cities were not designed for the mass influx of people. • The infrastructure was not sufficient to support the new population. • Infrastructure is all of the things built for public use: Roads, sewers, railroads, bridges, schools, fire and police stations, hospitals, libraries, power lines, water mains, etc.
Urban Crisis • The term urban crisis was invented to describe the problems with the infrastructure caused by the population explosion. • Urban crisis led to suburban sprawl – people moved out of the cities to the surrounding areas. Strip malls and more roomy houses popped up.
A better plan… • In the 1960s, government started planning the use of land around cities for better use. • This was called the “wedges and corridors” plan and became a cornerstone to land-use planning.
Inner-city renovation • To decrease the problems with infrastructure, crowding, and traffic congestion, cities around the globe have been slowly being renovated… • Improvements in mass transit • Revitalization of run-down properties • Including open spaces into cities • Roof-top gardens
