Chandra Deep Fields: New Clues to AGN Feedback from the Color-Magnitude Diagram Yongquan Xue Dept. of Astronomy & Astrophysics Penn State University Collaborators: W. N. Brandt, D. A. Rafferty, B. Luo, D. M. Alexander, F. E. Bauer, B. D. Lehmer, J. D. Silverman GC2009 Shanghai, 10/23/2009
Formation epoch at z~1-4 ~30-50% ~3
Connections between SMBHs and Their Hosts • At high z, connections between rapid SF and AGN activity in galaxies (e.g., Page et al. 2001; Alexander et al. 2005) • The peaks of AGN activity and star formation occur roughly in the same redshift range (z = 1.5-2) and there is a similar dramatic decline towards low redshift (z<1) (e.g., Lilly et al. 1995; Boyle & Terlevich 1998; Cowie et al. 2003)
Motivation • Push CMD studies to higher redshifts (z~3-4): Color bimodality for non-AGN galaxies? Color bimodality for AGN hosts ? AGN clustering in CMD? Evidence for AGN feedback? • Can we? Yes! Better data, redshifts, matching, etc.
Better Data: Deep and Wide Coverage • 2 Ms CDF-N (Alexander et al. 2003) • Hawaii HDF-N optical and NIR catalog (Capak et al. 2004) • GOODS-N ACS and IRAC catalogs (Dickinson et al. 2003) • GALEX HDF-N deep imaging survey catalog (GALEX Release 4 Data) • ACS GOODS-N region Ks (<24.5) catalog (Barger, Cowie, & Wang 2008) • GOODS-N MIPS 24 micron catalog (Dickinson et al. 2003)
Better Data: Deep and Wide Coverage • 2 Ms CDF-S (Luo et al. 2008) • MUSYC BVR-detected optical catalog (Gawiser et al. 2006) • COMBO-17 optical catalog (Wolf et al. 2004, 2008) • GOODS-S MUSIC catalog (Grazian et al. 2006) • MUSYC NIR catalog (Taylor et al. 2009) • SIMPLE IRAC catalog (Damen et al. 2009) • GALEX deep imaging survey catalog (GALEX Release 4 Data) • GOODS-S MIPS 24 micron catalog (Dickinson et al. 2003b)
Final sample: 204 X-ray selected AGNs and their parent sample of 9812 galaxies
Summary • Non-AGN galaxy color bimodality holds up to z~3-4 • No apparent color bimodality for AGN hosts from z~0-3 • Apparent AGN clustering in CMD up to z~2-3 • Most consistent with AGN feedback scenario (yet, need to work out the details)
