2. About Dr. Carson Dr. Carson is a world renowned neurosurgeon who rose from poverty to a preeminent position in the medical community. His Mother was one of 24 children, 3rd grade education, married at 13, she raised Dr. Carson and his brother Curtis in dire poverty as a single mother. She instilled in her boys the values of education and self-reliance. Dr. Carson was called the dumbest kid in 5th grade, but dreamed of being a Doctor. From a humble beginning, through study, discipline, and personal integrity, he rose to become the Head of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins at age 33. In 1987, Dr. Carson led a 35 member surgical team to perform the first successful separation of cranial co-joined Siamese twins. Dr. Carson is most recognized for pioneering a surgical procedure called a radical hemispherectomy. For a biographical overview of Dr. Carson – read “Gifted Hands”. • Carson Scholars Program – History • The Carson Scholars Fund, (CSF) Inc. was founded in 1994 to address the education crisis in the United States. • When world-renowned Johns Hopkins Pediatric Neurosurgeon Benjamin S. Carson, M.D. and his wife, Candy, read a research study about education in the United States, they were alarmed by the findings. The study showed that our nation’s students ranked #21 out of 22 countries; next to the bottom of the list in science and math and United States’ middle school students placed next-to-last in math and science against their peers worldwide. • Furthermore, the Carsons observed that many school display cases were filled with large trophies paying tribute to their sports teams’ achievements, while honor students only received a pin or certificate. • Dr. and Mrs. Carson felt compelled to take action. They believed that if children could be taught early to excel, they would stay motivated and have a higher chance of educational success later in life. The Carson Scholars Fund was built on these principles. • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5u6xhjNbaA • Carson Scholarship Program – Today Through the generosity of donors and partners, CSF awards approximately 500 scholarships annually. In total, CSF has awarded over 6200 scholarships to date. Over 1,800 Carson Scholars have been recognized for their academic and humanitarian achievements in multiple years. CSF scholars come from all across the country, and award winners currently represent all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Carson Scholarship winners have attended more than 450 colleges and universities, and have received over $3 million in scholarship funds to help finance their education. CSF Scholars volunteer in their communities at 4 times the rate of their peers nationally. Eligible students are first nominated by their local school administration, three student applications per school are forwarded to CSF . CSF evaluates all candidates, then selects, and notifies the winners and their schools. CSF provides a $1000 scholarship in in each winning student’s name and they receive it when they successfully enroll in an accredited 4 year college or university .

Opportunity • Success: Peace of mind that is a direct result of knowing that you did your best, to become the best you are capable of becoming. • Benefits of the Program need to be understood • Teachers have reported that classrooms with a Carson Scholar have experienced an overall increase in GPA • If there are opportunities for high achieving students, will those opportunities have an impact on lower achieving students? • How can you educate a cell group “with a correct definition of success?” • Move one cell group, and you move at least three! Opportunity • Long-term goals • Establish a perpetual endowments for all Seminole County schools ($30,000.00 each, $1.7M total) • Establish a local Chapter for Central Florida by 2016 • Establish CFPSBC-wide awareness for non-endowed schools – need a point of contact at each school / Student Advisory SAC liaison • Promote the program fully within Seminole County by 2017 (all 57 Schools) – Seminole County SB Approved • Achieve full central Florida - wide participation by 2019 • 2021 have all CFPSBC Schools participating ($17M) • What would a 7 time Carson Scholar look like to you? What impact would that have on your School District and yourcommunity? 7. Opportunity • Questions and Answers • $1,000.00 scholarship vs. $1,500.00 donated to Carson Scholars Fund? • Ans. The $500 pays for recognition package (School trophy, award banquet meals, certificate, and medal for the scholar). • How will funds be handled? • Ans. No Cash. Checks, credit cards only, all made payable to CSF and may be designated for use at the school or county of donor’s choosing. • What are the eligible grade levels? • Ans. Students in grades 4-11 can participate. • Questions and Answers • Can a scholar win more than once? • Ans. Yes, repeat scholars receive a pin and an invitation to the annual awards banquet. They do not receive additional monetary awards. • When is the scholarship paid? • Ans. The scholarship is paid out when the student is enrolled in an accredited 4 year college or university. The money is sent by CSF directly to the college/university for use by the student for academic expenses only.
