SYNTHETIC FUN! By: Michael Hua, Allie Brady, Alicia Rumble
Purpose? • To create a basic or acidic solution
Hypothesis • We were assigned Calcium (Ca). We know that this metal will make a basic solution because of previous experiments conducted (ex. Periodic Table and Classification of Metals).
Personal Protective Procedure – PPP Absorption – clean up spills immediately – wash any chemicals off hands Ingestion – do not ingest Injection – Clean up any broken glass Personal Protective Equipment – PPE Absorption – glasses or apron Injection – broom and dustpan – cork borer
Materials • Blue and Red Litmus Paper • Phenolpthalein Solution • 100 mL of Water • Calcium (Ca) • 1 - 100 mL graduated cylinder • 1 – 250 mL beaker • Wire Gauze
Procedure • 1) Transferred the Calcium (Ca) in a weigh boat. • 2)Measured 100mL of water in a cleaned 100mL graduated cylinder • 3) Transferred the water from the graduated cylinder to a cleaned 250mL beaker. • 4) Transferred Calcium (Ca) into the water • 5) Cover beaker with a wire gauze • 6) Test the pH level of the water by using blue and red litmus paper. • 7) Tested with the phenolphthalein solution.
Observations When the calcium was transferred into the water: • Bubbles formed within 30 seconds • Smoke was forming inside the beaker • The calcium was starting to dissolve rapidly • Calcium was dissolved in 2 minutes, 30 seconds. • Red litmus paper turned blue • Blue litmus paper remained the same colour • The solution turned pink when the phenolpthalein solution was added
Conclusion • We created a basic solution with the Calcium (Ca), therefore our hypothesis was correct.
