Twenty credits • The key drivers for moving from a 15 credit modular structure to 20 credits are as follows: • Greater depth of learning • Reduction of the number of modules - improved learning and quality • Reduced administrative duties for academic staff • Reduction in the number of assessments for students - greater depth and focus and improved achievement • Improved student feedback • Reduced marking load for academic staff • Structure predominantly used in other HEIs and therefore this will more readily enable partnerships and articulations www.derby.ac.uk/udb
The three E’s • Employability • Education for Application • Experiential learning www.derby.ac.uk/udb
Motivations for studying within the area • "... to pursue a dream job and career" • "to have better job opportunities". • "better career prospects ... with qualifications". • "find a good job as a spa manager". Employability was the “top trump” www.derby.ac.uk/udb
What employers wanted • Employees that could “hit the ground running” • …. Strong practical skills • Business acumen Employability was a combination of knowledge and skills www.derby.ac.uk/udb
Our findings • Our programmes needed to be developed with and for industry • They needed to develop the knowledge and skills for immediate employment • The “license to practise” would need to be developed both within and outside of the curriculum www.derby.ac.uk/udb
Education for Application • The square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides www.derby.ac.uk/udb
Education for Application The acquisition of knowledge without the ability to apply it worthless! www.derby.ac.uk/udb
Education for Application www.derby.ac.uk/udb
Experiential Learning • Experiential learning involves a direct encounter with the phenomena being studied rather than merely thinking about the encounter, or only considering the possibility of doing something about it. • "Tell me, and I will forget. Show me, and I may remember. Involve me, and I will understand." www.derby.ac.uk/udb
