Supporting your daughter through the transition. What can YOU do to make sure your daughter is prepared for Year 7?
Supporting your daughter through the transition • 100% attendance and punctuality. Everything students learn in their lessons is important. Missing lessons or being late means your daughter will be at a disadvantage. Holidays and other Appointments need to be taken during school holidays. • Attend all Parents Evenings and Review days, when we will be discussing your daughter’s progress • Support the school ensuring your daughter is focused and has excellent behaviour for learning. • Support us with uniform.
Developing good habits • The habits and routines developed in Year 7 are those that will stay with them throughout their secondary and higher schooling and often throughout their working lives. • Students in general will be expected to be more independent, self reliant and self organised which will be a welcome development for many but still a challenge for most.
Organisation. Check with your daughter regularly that she has all the correct equipment, updating the supplies regularly. Ensuring their bag is big enough to hold all the equipment they will need. Checking planners on a weekly basis, contacting the tutor if nothing is written in it, or if you have not seen it. Make sure that bags, books, planners and equipment are brought to school everyday. Teach a routine of ‘emptying the bag’ regularly, do this with them to begin with then let them take over. Encourage you daughter to glue extra worksheets so as not to be overwhelmed by the sheet volume of paper.
Homework • Agree a routine for homework with your daughter. In our experience the best way is to do it on the night and as soon as they get in. Then make sure they stick to it. • If you are around when they are completing it you can do progress checks, if not ask them about their homework and day for that matter when you get home. You want to find that balance of assisting but encouraging them to be independent.
Contacting the school • Keep talking to your daughter about how things are going at school. • Falling out with friends is very common in the first few weeks, as new friendships and pecking orders are established. Most are sorted out without adults getting involved. • Don’t let things fester • If there are issues and you have not been able to solve them at home, speak to the school
