Hallucinogens Definition- Drugs that distort perceptions and cause a person to see or hear things that are not real. Emotional experiences seem deeper and more intense. May also produce extreme anxiety, fear, paranoia, distortions
LSD • Taken as a tablet or absorbed. • Range of experiences • Flashback- feeling the effects of a hallucinogen long after effects worn off
LSD • Effects- Not easy to predict • Increase energy, alter mood, create strange thoughts & feelings/sensations, swings • Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, bizarre body sensations
LSD Long Term Effects Flashbacks Some LSD users relive their experiences after the effects of the drug have worn off. Bad Trip A negative experience on LSD, it can leave you traumatized for days or even weeks. Synesthesia Sensory perceptions may blend in which a person seems to hear or feel colors and see sounds.
Mushrooms-Psilocybin • Similar effects as LSD • Eaten raw or mixed with food • Effects- altered perceptions of sight, sound, taste, smell, touch • Confusion, anxiety, panic • Flashbacks may occur-days, weeks
Peyote-Mescaline • Small, spineless cactus in which the principal active ingredient is mescaline • Top of the peyote cactus, also referred to as the crown, consists of disc-shaped buttons that are cut from the roots and dried • Chewed or soaked in water to produce an intoxicating liquid
PCP • PCP (phencyclidine) was developed in the 1950s as an anesthetic. It was discontinued due to side effects. • White crystalline powder. It has a distinctive bitter chemical taste. • tablet, capsule, and colored powder that are normally snorted, smoked, or orally ingested.
Ketamine • Taken- snorted • Initially used as a vet tranquilizer • Effects- Increased awareness of senses, loss judgment
Ecstasy • Swallowed or snorted • Effects- Increased awareness of senses, mild hallucinations, loss judgment, increased energy • The awareness of senses explains some of the rave behavior
Ecstasy Side Effects- muscle tension, teeth clenching, impaired learning & memory, nausea, chills, rapid/irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, heart attack, brain damage, death. Inability to regulate temperature
Ecstasy • Health Consequences- Impaired learning & memory, overheating, rapid/irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, heart attack, death • Depression due to receptor degeneration • Do you know what you are actually taking? (PMA, caffeine, cocaine, etc.)
