  2. Questions to IGFA Members 1) What elements of IGFA are most valuable to your organization? • What would make the partnership more relevant to your needs? Responses: 10 out ≈ 20 ≈ 50%

Q.1 (i) – Value of IGFA to Members ● Forum for the discussion and exchange of information on research trends, activities and programs as well as the management and administration of research funds● Networking (at both the executive and working level) with other funding agencies to learn from their experiences and best practices● Yearly national and programme reports are a valuable source of information. Only international organization which collects data on the funding and research priorities of its members● International co-operation is important for small countries

  4. Q.1 (ii) – Value of IGFA to Members ● Useful forum to discuss and learn about emerging trends in GCR research globally. Useful source for defining and implementing (own) research agendas● Highlighting national and regional initiatives of interest to member countries and developing future partnerships● Contact with people from the global and regional research programmes and organizations is very enriching since it provides an opportunity to develop collaborative initiatives● IGFA is a very useful forum to establish contacts with functionaries and research managers (from different countries), which allows for the promotion of collaborative projects

Q. 2 (i) – Improve Relevance of IGFA to Members ● Improve exchange of best practices re: promotion and supporting global change research; particularly concerning the science – policy interface and integration of the social and natural sciences; ● Stimulate more discussion on strategic GCR issues for meeting the needs of Africa and/or other small or developing nations; ● Influence the scope of international research programs to better meet the needs of Africa and/or other small or developing nations; ● Improve the reporting of program and member country activities to more closely address member country needs

Q. 2 (ii) – Improve the Relevance of IGFA to Members ● More effectively identify new or emerging research trends and needs AND initiate collaborative efforts to address or deal with them ● Identify, discuss and consider the longer term implications of emerging science programs, their trends and implications for national funding agencies ● Focus on scientific and science-related issues of strategic importance, including internationally coordinated research efforts and a more targeted (international) focus on issues of importance

Q. 2 (iii) – Improve the Relevance of IGFA to Members ● Facilitate the development of partnerships by simply not just providing a venue once a year, but by also setting up mechanisms that would be sustainable throughout the year. For example, could IGFA be the medium by which a few countries sign an Memorandum of Understanding to support collaboration on Global Change Research? ● Assess the relevance of the international ICSU GCR Programmes to both national (member country) agendas and benefits (received). In particular, the return on investment for membership dues paid.

Issues of interest to IGFA (2007) include: Information exchange about national research programs, priorities, policies, facilities, resources and initiatives; Best practices in international research cooperation; Strategies for development and application of funding allocations for global change research; and for international coordination of this funding. IGFA stimulates discussion of : Research policy and infrastructure issues of mutual interest, including data management, access and sharing and international observing systems; Ways to improve interactions among scientists, policymakers and other stakeholders, and the uptake and use of research results;The dissemination and sharing of research results; Capacity building. IGFA identifies : Opportunities for future action and research in the light of constantly changing scientific needs; Priority issues and options for addressing these through coordinated action.

  10. The International Group of Funding Agencies for Global Change Research (IGFA) is a co-operative organization of national agencies that support scientific research on global change issues. Established in 1991, its goal is to foster global change research. IGFA provides a forum for its member agencies to identify trends and opportunities in global change research and to share information on national funding strategies. Through meetings, reports and dialogue at a senior level, it encourages international coordination of research and harmonized support in priority areas. It is not a funding body.

  11. 2007 Mission Statement IGFA stimulates global change research by identifying trends and opportunities, sharing information on national funding strategies and encouraging coordinated international support in priority areas.

  12. IGFA – 2003 Goals The goal of the International Group of Funding Agencies for Global Change Research (IGFA) is to foster Global Change Research. IGFA is a forum through which national agencies that fund Research on Global Change identify issues of mutual interest and ways to address these through national and when appropriate through coordinated international actions. Important issues for consideration by IGFA include: • Information exchange about national global change research programs, as well as about supporting initiatives and facilities; • Approaches to the integration and implementation of global change research in light of available resources; • Optimization of funding allocations for global change research and its international coordination; • Infrastructural topics of mutual interest, including data accessibility and observation systems; • Ways to improve the interaction between science and policy; and possible fields of action for the future in the light of a constantly changing scientific landscape, e.g. changing scopes of the international research programs.
