Integrated Risk Governance Project (Draft) The mission of the IRG-Project is to improve the management of new risks that exceed current human coping capacities. We do so by focusing on the transitions in and out of the occurrence of those risks. Identified Research Questions: In what respects does a given risk exceed the capacity of given coping institutions and resources? What aspects of entry and exit transitions foster or hinder robustness with regard to the relevant risks? What are the key dynamic patterns of the entry and exit transitions? Who can do what to improve entry and exit transitions and thus risk management (governance)? Case studies: hurricanes, (ice) storms, heat waves, floods and droughts, also financial markets, technology and risks

Capacity Building and Science-Policy Interactions • 6th IHDW, Delhi, on: adaptation, water management, health, industrial transformation, ecosystem services (80 participants) • Visiting Scholar Programme • On Science-Policy: It’s about “tools” (communication, advisory and review panels, workshops and policy forums, key partners “boundary organizations”); however, for IHDP it’s a subject to study as well! (e.g. within KLSC) • 2nd IHDP Science Policy Dialogue on Energy, Santa Barbara, 19-20 June 2008 • Bonn Dialogues on Global Environmental Change
Demographic Challenges (health focus!) • Challenges fromlimitations of resources/ecosystem services • Issues of social cohesion and equity • Adaptive institutions and governance • 1,200 participants, 800 submissions, 80 sessions, special sessions • Support for participants is still needed!
Funding situation Stabilized (at a lower level) Funding gap 250,000 EUR (current budget 850,000 EUR) “Innovative staffing” to cope with the situation in the short term On the basis of stable core support, greater involvement in project based funding Getting additional National Contributions
