The Care Commission: • is the national regulator of care services in Scotland • was set up under the ‘Regulation of Care (Scotland) Act 2001’ • started operating in April 2002.
What we do • We regulate to improve the quality of care in Scotland. 4,087 adult services 97 independent healthcare services 10,687 children services 14,871 services Source: Care Commission care service list 31 March 2008
Involvement – Why? • Improved quality of services – more efficient and better care services that meet real needs and reflect community values. • Capacity building and learning for individuals and organisations • Provides a basis for future growth and • Development • Builds stronger communities.
How do the Care Commission involve people who use care services? • Involving People Group • Equality Consultation Panel • Lay Assessor Scheme • Care Commission Forums • Easy Read Documents • DVD’s
What do we expect of care services? • Must have formal mechanisms like a Participation / Involvement Strategy and Action Plan - to demonstrate how people who use care services are involved and able to influence how their care is delivered. • This should be implemented and reviewed both in care planning, reviews and in considering how the service is managed.
Involved residents in staff recruitment and assessments Given residents more say in personal plans Asked residents and relatives to grade the service Held regular residents meetings Trained staff in participation issues Elected a spokesperson to talk to Care Commission Officers Examples of good practice – care services with good grades have:
