Exaples of Sirens Manatees may reach Dugongs may reach 600kg (1320lb.) 420kg (930lb.) 4.5m (almost 15ft) 3m (10ft) Largest sirenian of all was the now-extinct Stellar’s sea cow which supposedly grew to 7.5m (25ft) Manatees Dugongs
Facts on Mammals & Sirens • Approximately 1,000 West Indian manatees remain along coasts and rivers of Florida. • Some concentrate along warm-water effluents of power-plants. They’re strictly protected. • Collisions with boats take their toll on the sirenians. • They are considered a possible way to control weeds in waterways. • People suggest raising them for food. • Humans exploit their meat, skin, and oil rich blubber.
