  1. Mammals & Sirens Lisa Kearns & Breanne Marks

  2. Characteristics of all Mammals • Endotherms - “warm-blooded” • Has hair instead feathers to retain body heat. • Viviparous – the embryo receives nutrients and oxygen through the placenta (aka- the after birth) • Fed through mammary glands (like breastfeeding). • Produce few, but well cared for, young. • Brain is larger in relation to body size and far more complex than other vertebrates (better memory)

  3. Characteristics of Sirenia • AKA- Sea Cows/ Related to the elephant. • Pair of front flippers; no rear limbs. • Swim w/ up and down strokes of paddle-shaped, horizontal tail. • Round tapered body well padded with blubber. • Wrinkled skin w/ few scattered hairs. • Gentle creatures/ live in groups. • ONLY strict vegetarians among marine mammals. • One calf every 3yrs. • Only 4 species remain because of deforestation from human interaction. • In danger of extinction.

  4. Exaples of Sirens Manatees may reach Dugongs may reach 600kg (1320lb.) 420kg (930lb.) 4.5m (almost 15ft) 3m (10ft) Largest sirenian of all was the now-extinct Stellar’s sea cow which supposedly grew to 7.5m (25ft) Manatees Dugongs

  5. Facts on Mammals & Sirens • Approximately 1,000 West Indian manatees remain along coasts and rivers of Florida. • Some concentrate along warm-water effluents of power-plants. They’re strictly protected. • Collisions with boats take their toll on the sirenians. • They are considered a possible way to control weeds in waterways. • People suggest raising them for food. • Humans exploit their meat, skin, and oil rich blubber.
