Safety Following are notes on general lab safety, proper dress for the lab and accident procedures.
General Safety • Never work in the lab without a teacher present. • Follow ALL instructions carefully. • ONLY do things the teacher tells you to. • No food or drink is allowed in the lab. • No gum allowed either • Avoid wearing your contacts on lab days.
General Safety Continued • Act responsibly and maturely in the lab. • HANDS OFF others at all times. • Keep work area clean and uncluttered. Only have materials out that you need. • Dispose of all waste in the appropriate place (as instructed by the teacher). • Make sure that all equipment is unplugged at the end of the lab.
Continued • Return all equipment to the appropriate place, or as instructed by the teacher. • Know where all safety equipment is located. Only use safety equipment if an accident occurs.
Lab Apparel Concerns • Do not wear loose fitting sleeves, skirts etc. or open toe shoes. • Hair that is long enough to be put in an elastic must be put back in one. • Safety goggles are required for some labs and should stay on the whole time. • Lab aprons or gloves are sometimes required and should stay on the whole time.
Accident Procedures • Report all accidents or injuries to the teacher IMMEDIATELY, even if you think it’s no big deal. • Should you come in contact with any chemicals be sure to go to the sink immediately to rinse with cold water. • The eye wash station is used for materials getting into your eyes; rinse for at least 15 minutes.
Accident Procedures Continued • Clean up all spills IMMEDIATELY. • Use a broom and dust pan to clean up broken glass and dispose of it in the proper container.
