Independence Whilst the children are still young, we strongly encourage them to become more independent in different tasks and responsibilities. Book bags – encouraging children to give in letters and notes. Being responsible for their own property – water bottles, jumpers, coats, lunch boxes, etc. (bringing into school and taking home again!) is really important. This is so much easier for the children if everything is named. Encourage children to know what they are having for their lunch.
Year 1 Structure In Autumn Term structure of activities is similar to EYFS – 2 groups learning with an adult and other children undertaking ‘child initiated learning’ In Spring Term children undertake more ‘formal’ learning activities independently In Summer Term ‘child initiated learning’ is linked to subject being taught e.g. in Maths children could play snakes and ladders or match number sentences in the sand
Water Bottles All children should have a named water bottle that stays in the classroom throughout the day, as they are encouraged to drink water to keep hydrated Children have their water bottles with them at break time and lunchtime Water bottles need to go home everyday to be replenished
Behaviour Systems Class behaviour system – rainbow Class bonus gems Individual gem points Owl merits - linked to school values
Consequence sheet (C1, C2, C3, C4, C5) C3 and C4 behaviours are logged in a book C4 parents are informed
PE Kits P.E takes place on a Wednesday. Please ensure that appropriate school uniform PE kits are in on this day and that kits are taken home regularly to be washed. White T-shirts, green shorts, green/black jogging bottoms, change of socks and daps/trainers (trainers are preferred as they support feet). Our school policy is for children to get changed independently in 5 minutes. Encouragement of this at home would be appreciated. Please ensure your child can turn their clothes from inside out to the correct way and independently put on socks/tights. Trainers needed for the Golden Mile every day.
PE Kits continued Hair MUST be tied back if long enough. No jewellery to be worn (earrings must be taken out or taped up). Children get changed for PE after school clubs in the hall.
Spellings New spellings will go out on a Monday. Spelling activities are carried out in spelling home learning books. Spelling books are handed in on a Friday for a spelling test. The number of spellings is set according to what is appropriate for each child. At the end of each term there will be a test of all the words learnt that term.
Nippy Numbers To start week 4. Nippy Numbers quiz will be carried out on Wednesday. Children to learn and practise their focus facts so that they are memorised and can be instantly recalled. Matching games and then oral questions are a good way of learning them. Gem points and stickers will be awarded for progress made. We will also practise facts in school.
Reading • Your child will be given a colour to pick their reading books from. • Please try to listen to your child read for 5 minutes every day. • Each time you hear your child read please make a note of it. A smiley face next to the book name to show that you have heard them read is fine. You can make a comment if you wish. (Gem points given to children who regularly read) • Twice a week the books will be changed.
Reading continued • An adult will sign the book on hearing that child during Guided Reading. • Please make sure that the reading book and record are in their book-bags everyday as we will need to write in them ourselves. • If they get lost a new one will cost £2.
The Wider Curriculum Our topic this half term is ‘Roots, Shoots and Muddy Boots’. Hooty Owl visits.
Communication Ways to communicate with school reports to parents 2 x parents’ evenings 1 x open session School website Email office: admin@lydiardmillicentceps.org We will be on the playground before school for any urgent issues.
Communication • In response to feedback, we have decided to record meetings with parents on a parent meeting sheet. • Concerns can be raised and follow up actions noted. • All members present can see and will sign the document at the end of the meeting. • A photocopy will be made and given to the parent.
