Life Cycle • Females mate 10-12 hours after becoming adult • Can hold A LOT of sperm from many different males • Fertilizes eggs as she lays them • Important for controlled crosses to have virgin females
Morphology of Flies • Wild-Type = normal
How to study flies • They fly.. And they will fly.. If you let them. • Use ice to anesthetize them • Petri dishes with lids ON! • If they start to wake, put back on ice • Use dissecting scopes and paint brushes to examine
So, what are we doing today? • Partners • Wild-type flies • Sort according to sex • Practice looking at anatomy (wings, sex organs, eye color)
What will we be doing?? • 3 vials of F1 flies with different mutations • Each group will be assigned a vial but will not know what the cross was • Study the F1’s • Let F1’s mate to produce F2’s… wait for eggs to hatch over the course of 2 weeks • Examine F2’s • Try to find the inheritance pattern of your flies
