Questions • Where do most Algerians live? • What is a typical Berber household like? • How do most people who live in Berber villages make their livings? • How have the Arabs influenced Berber life? • What are some features of Algerian cities?
Compare and Contrast • Work in groups of four an make a Venn diagram showing similarities and differences between the Berbers and the Arabs of Algeria. We will use the diagrams as a basis for discussion of this section.
Background • Arabic is the official language of Algeria an the language spoken by a majority of Algerians. It is also the main language throughout North Africa and Southwest Asia. Many Arabic dialects exist. Classical Arabic is the language of the Quran and is considered the ideal. It also is the language in which Arab achievements in science, religion, and literature have been preserved. Because Arabic has been so important in the spreading of Islamic culture, it is a vital link among all Arab countries.
Travel Brochure • In groups of four, write and decorate a travel brochure for visitors to Algiers, the capital of Algeria. You may use both computers to research Algiers so you can advise visitors on appropriate clothing, historical sights, food, entertainment, transportation, etc.
