“The Top Five Things You Are Thinking This Afternoon”! • I can’t wait until to happy hour… • I hope I can learn something easy to do with my students… • Well, let’s write this class down and leave… In 5,4,3,2,1 • I hope this is not a sales pitch! • I either need to eat or I just ate much!
5 Reasons why you need this training! 5. It’s games and ideas you can prepare and use as soon as school starts. 4. I am pretty sure that your school district did not pass out individual budgets for this conference, so you need some free ideas! 3. Children need to know how to relate math to the real world. 2. An engaging class as not always QUIET! 1. IT’ S FRRREEEEEEE IDEAS!
Classroom Games and Center Activities • My classroom centers are set up around my guided math time. We change center topics weekly. • Mondays & Fridays are whole class activities, while the others days are used for partner/group activities. • Train your class from the 1st day of school about center and games rules. Make sure that you model/encourage appropriate behavior throughout the year. • This activities are high-interest activities that build computational and problem solving abilities.
Internet Activities and Ideas • Use concerts and record sale information for place value. • Use websites such as teacher created, education center, and etc… to print whole lessons for the sample pages of books you want to purchase. • When teaching money use www.usmint.gov for ideas (since they do make the money). • Print online zoo or amusement park maps from measurement. • Use height information for amusement parks for measurement conversions.
Playing Card Centers • My addiction to playing cards… • Card games should be taught during the first weeks of school. • Why? • How long? • There is a card game that you can relate to every math TEK. • Operation: Spoons • Fifty • Odd/Even Number Speed • Math Slap
Make Your Own Game Boards • Game Boards are good for math vocabulary study • Using the many workbooks that you may have in your classroom • Have students to make their own questions up using the objective for the day/week • Use for partner or small group review of weak objectives. • All you need is a game board, a die, and a colored counter or paper clip!
