Propaganda • Relies on appeals to emotion: • patriotism • familial love • sex • anger • racial /religious animosity • xenophobia • stereotypes/dehumanization • Appeals to authority • Appeals to popularity (“bandwagon”) • Appeals to tradition • Uses manipulation: • half-truths, distortions • false dilemmas • non sequiturs • glittering generalities • veiled threats • Tries to stifle disagreement Persuasion Uses fear appeals prudently Offers evidence (logos) Provides sources Allows audience members to make up own minds Allows for differing point of view SOURCE: Doob, Leonard W.
