Joints of the Skeleton • Joints • Types of Joints • Allow bones to move in different ways 1) Moveable- allow body to make wide range of movements 2) Immovable- allows little or no movement
Moveable Joints • Connective tissues • Ligaments hold together the bones • Cartilage holds together the joints and is more flexible than bone.
Types of Movable Joints • Hinge Joint • Allows forward or backward motion. Examples are the knee and elbow.
Moveable Joints (cont.) • Ball and Socket Joint • Allows the greatest range of motion. Examples are the shoulders and hips.
Moveable Joints (cont.) • Pivot Joint • Allows one bone to rotate around another. An example is your neck.
