Volunteering and over 50s – why? • Volunteering is for people of all ages, but for over 50s it CAN be a way to: • increase chances of gaining employment • gain self confidence • increase social networks • make a difference to others • change your own life • feel useful • help fill time • give you purpose • get experience of being in a workplace • keep heating bills lower! • get references
Volunteering in over 50s – employability skills • Employers often look for people who are: • reliable • willing to try new things • able to get involved and ‘give’ something • helpful • have good communication skills • able to solve problems • motivated • able to work in a team • are organised • have a ‘can do’ attitude • All things that can be improved and demonstrated through • volunteering.
How volunteering helped me • I know that my volunteering experience in youth work helped me get work in a primary school as a dinner lady and then as a teaching assistant. • Through that I saw teachers working and thought that I too could do a professional job. • I gained confidence and went to evening classes and at the age of 40 went back to university and studied for a degree in Leisure and Tourism with Art and Design.
How I got jobs • When I first graduated in 2000, I got a job working in a visitor centre, managing paid staff and a team of volunteers. • Then I got a job in promotions at the University of Plymouth for a Railway Partnership. • Then I got a job as a Tourism Officer to cover for maternity leave. • When that job ended, my experience as a volunteer and working with volunteers helped me get a job as a Volunteer Centre Manager. • I have also gone on to study more.
My job now • Now I work for North Devon Voluntary Services and love my job! • I help people and organisations every day and see the difference volunteering makes to peoples lives – it really can transform them. • We have had a project helping unemployed people, with additional barriers, of all ages into volunteering and the results can be truly amazing!
Finally.. Would I recommend volunteering to others as a way to get work? Absolutely YES!
