The PreACT Information for “college-bound” 10th graders Brought to you by the CB West Guidance Department
College Admission Requirements • The SAT and ACT are exams that colleges use to help determine a student’s college readiness, or likelihood of success your first semester of college. • Most colleges will require at least one set of SAT or ACT scores as part of admissions. • Colleges have no preference, and will use your highest SAT or ACT scores. • Practice exams are offered by both exam companies: • The CollegeBoard offers the PSAT as preparation for the SAT. • The ACT organization offers the PreACT as preparation for the ACT.
… but, I’ve only heard about the SAT!!?? • The SAT isn’t the only option, despite what you may hear. • The ACT is actually the most commonly taken admissions exam in the United States. • Students should explore BOTH the SATand the ACT to identify the exam that will result in the highest set of scores.
Practice, Practice, Practice! • During 10th grade, you now have the ability to take both the PSAT and the PreACT as practice for the SAT / ACT. • This is ideal, as you can learn which exam is a better fit for you prior to signing up for the “real thing” during your 11th grade year. • By identifying the exam that fits you best, you’ll be able to prepare for that exam format, and narrow your focus/strategy. • Reduce the amount of testing during 11th grade by getting exposure to both formats during 10th, saving time and money.
PreACT Information • The PreACT is a multiple choice assessment, designed to simulate an ACT experience, covering English, Math, Reading, and Science related content. • PreACT scores are provided in the familiar 1-36ACT scale. • The PreACT provides actionable insights to help parents and students make important decisions related to academics and college planning. • Visit the ACT website for more information. • Alternatively, look at this Magoosh.com site for a more comprehensive overview.
PreACT at CB West High School • The PreACT will be given to 10th grade students on Saturday, March 30th, 2019. • The PreACT is not offered to 11th grade students. • No alternative testing date is available. • Students must arrive to their assigned testing room by 7:45am. • Arrange for pickup around 11:15am. • On test day, plan to bring two #2 pencils, and approved calculator, and a school ID. • Testing room assignments will be posted outside of Guidance the week before the exam.
