SCT - brief overview • Current situation: • barrel module production will start very soon. Significant number of modules available by the summer • forward module production delayed by problems with hybrid. Possibly 9-12 months before production of modules begins? • Hence critical time on schedule is when assembly of the first production barrel (innermost = barrel 3) begins • will be at Oxford • assembly due to start in Q3 2002 and take ~9 months • complete barrel has 384 modules (=8 fully populated RODs) SCT/Pixel RODDAQ Workshop
Prior to the assembly of the first barrel: • need user evaluation of hardware and software (systemtest?) • Oxford wish to receive kit a couple of months before assembly begins • Hence want to have initial, working system ~May 2002. • Hardware schedule: • 4 (pre-)production RODs built. Up to 13 in total could be made by summer 2002. • 2 pre-production BOCs assembled in early March. Up to 11 could be made by summer 2002. • Caveat: minimal optical components are available at present (hoping for 10 opto plug-ins (120 channels) each of RX and TX by mid-March, but main supply not available until (mid-?)May.). Until then, BOCs will be partially populated with optical components. • 4 prototype TIMs made. Up to 10 in total could be made by summer 2002. SCT/Pixel RODDAQ Workshop
Hardware schedule continued: • all extra RODs, BOCs, TIMs would need 2 months to manufacture • design work on production RODs, BOCs and TIMs should be completed by July 2002. PRR ~August 2002. Then production would start ~September 2002. • numbers of modules and current schedule is not incompatible with needs • ~4 RODs in May 2002 • ~6 RODs in July 2002 • Post September 2002 - should move into production and hence be able to cover all needs SCT/Pixel RODDAQ Workshop
Possible way forward: • first working setup ~April/May 2002 - this would logically go in the CERN systemtest • in parallel, kit build-up at Oxford, especially to allow them to develop software especially needed for macro-assembly work (e.g. DAQ-DCS, special equipment). • setup suitable for routine module readout during macro-assembly ~June/July 2002. Initially would only need to readout 1 ROD, but relatively quickly would be required to handle 2 RODs. • system for reading-out multiple RODs would develop during Autumn/Winter 2002. • Test beam - not considered to be on critical path. No NEED for ROD-based readout in 2002 test beam, but it would in principle be a useful extra test bed. • However, shortage of resources probably excludes it as an option. Could be considered in 2003 or 2004 as part of combined Inner Detector tests - but then wouldn’t be a test bed. SCT/Pixel RODDAQ Workshop
What does a working setup need? • see Requirements Document of GFM and PWP! • following is not a definitive list: • (re)configure and readout module or groups of modules • recovery from power supply trips/module hangups • event data retrieval, analysis and storage (via VME backplane) • historgram booking, filling and storage • (re)characterisation of modules - including a variety of possible parameter scans • handle an increasing number of modules, up to O(103) • implies • DAQ and DCS must interact reliably and coherently • control interface must allow great flexibility • some functions may be developed on the RCC and migrate to ROD DSPs SCT/Pixel RODDAQ Workshop
Summary • April/May 2002 - 1st DAQ required (systemtest and Oxford), with developing functionality towards... • July 2002 - DAQ with most of required functionality, capable of supporting macro-assembly activities, though initially with only 1 or 2 RODs, but expanding with time to... • ~March 2003 - completion of first barrel - DAQ can read out ~8 RODS (400 detectors). • Up to this point, only single-crate arrangements with no use of S-link are assumed. This is probably necessary at macro-assembly sites to minimise complexity. • Further in the future - multi-crate DAQ, when >1 barrel are brought together. Timeframe for this is less clear. Also at what stage do we need to integrate T/DAQ equipment (start of 2004, when should have all 4 barrels together?). SCT/Pixel RODDAQ Workshop
