Zombie Cure • You are camping. You decide to take a stroll through the woods, but become lost. You sit for just a minute – and are bitten by a zombie! You get even more lost in the woods while running away from the zombie.
The rules: • It takes 24 hours to become a zombie • You won't become a zombie until you fall asleep • The cure lies in information resources • Things you do will results in time lost...some more than others • Begin Your Quest
Beginning Your Research You have several options to begin. You have a smart phone, but the signal is pretty weak. Where should you start? • Jump right in and search • Find out background information • Ask the wise old owl in the tree for help
Jump right in and search You spend a lot of time poking around and doing some searches, but you're not having much luck because there's so much information on so many topics - including a lot about movies and television shows with zombies. You just put in words , but they don't seem to be helping much. Plus, your connection is so slooooow in the middle of nowhere. . Your time is valuable...this cost you 4 hours. 20:00 left What to do next?
Find out background information Yes, this path is perfect. You can find out background information by searching your main concept in a source like Wikipedia or Encyclopedia Britannicato read up on the topic and get some ideas. A textbook, if you were in a course, might be good too. You now know a bit more about the topic, you may have an idea of a more narrowed-down topic and have some idea of terms you want to use. You didn't waste your time! You found some good information in some online encyclopedias. Based on your readings, you decided to focus on zombie bites and bacteria. Research takes time, though. You lose 2 hours. 22:00 left What's Next?
Ask the wise old owl in the tree for help I have no way to help you if you have no idea what your topic is about! There are a lot of things out there about zombies, bites, and diseases...you might want to narrow things down. Go find out a bit more background on these topics. You can talk to me again later if you need to - I can definitely help then. Speaking about background, I hatched on a Monday.... Your time is valuable...this cost you 1 hour. 23:00 left Find Background Research
Search options Your topic is zombie bites and bacteria. Which path do you take? • Search only the web...information elsewhere won't be relevant and I can search quickly • Search multiple resources so you won't miss something • Ask the wise old owl in the tree for help
Search only the web Your internet connection deep in these woods is really bad, so searching took you much longer than you thought it would. You find some good information, but several items you want weren't free. Your credit cards are back at home (and your available credit won't handle how much everything costs - the books and articles you found were over $500!!!), so you decide to look online elsewhere for these items...but never have any luck. First the good: You find a page that says Alliumsativum shows promise as a cure. You do a search that finds this is a scientific name for garlic. This takes 30 minutes.
Now the bad: Lose 2 hours trying, unsuccessfully, to find four journal articles for free that a web page said were promising leads. Lose 1 hours total trying, unsuccessfully, to find 3 books for free that a web page said were promising leads. You also run across a page with no author mentioned which said the cure for zombie bites was definitely to take twice the normal dose of a common allergy medicine, which you have in your back pack just in case of an allergic reaction. You take it just in case, but it only made you fall asleep for 6 hours. You seem to have a slight craving for braaaaaaaains when you wake up, but eat a banana and chew some gum instead. All of this causes you to lose 9.5 hours! 7:30 left Continue
What to do now? You're pretty frustrated. You found some good info, but found items that weren't free online. You also wasted a lot of time using some bad information. You see that owl again. Perhaps you should ask the owl for help?
Ask the wise old owl in the tree for help Oh it's you again. Glad to see you did some background research. Also glad to see you're not a zombie. Focusing on zombie bites and bacteria is probably a good bet! There's so much information on the web! But what about the information researchers provide in articles that aren't free? What about books or ebooks that go into major detail about the topic? You'll be missing all that valuable information - or else have to pay for it yourself when the library can probably get it for you! The owl was helpful, but it took some time. You lose 1/2 hour. 7:00 left Go search multiple resources
Search multiple sources #1. Search the web You find a page that says Alliumsativum shows promise as a cure. You do a search that finds this is a scientific name for garlic. This takes 1/2 hour. You find another page that indicates a double dose of a common allergy medicine is the cure. This takes ½ hour also. You're tempted to throw the smart phone off a cliff because it's so slow, but you need to find a cure. You save this information to compare with what others say. 1 hour Continue
#2 . Search library databases (TexShare) for e-books (in NetLibrary) Good thing you go to Ranger College. RC has a lot of e-book resources. You find several that seem promising and find some good information. Unfortunately, your connection is STILL slow. E-book 1 mentions penicillin as a promising cure. You're familiar with that as a popular antibiotic. - 1/2 hour to find this in the book E-book 2 mentions that it's important to put bacitracin on a zombie bite - 1/2 hour to find this. However, you're not sure what this is, so do a slow web search to find out this is in topical antibiotic ointments - 1/2 hour to find this. E-book 3 mentions that you should take paracetamol- 1/2 hour to find this. However, you're not sure what this is, so do a slow web search to find out this is what Europeans call acetaminophen (also known by the brand name Tylenol® - 1/2 hour to find this. 2 1/2 hours Continue
#3. Search library databases Luckily, you're a student. You have access to hundreds of databases that find journal content in tens of thousands of scholarly journals. You pick a medical database and search. Article 1 indicates Boletus edulisas promising. This takes you 1/2 hour to find. However, you have no idea what this is, so you do a slow web search to find out this is the penny bun mushroom - This takes another 1/2 hour to find. Article 2 indicates that eggs of the species Anasrubripesare promising as a cure. This takes you 1/2 hour to find. However, you have no idea what this is, so you do a slow web search to find out this is the American Black Duck - This takes another 1/2 hour to find. Article 3 indicates that nuts of the species Caryaillinoinensis show promise as a cure. This takes you 1/2 hour to find. However, you have no idea what this is either, so you do a slow web search to find out this is pecan nuts- This takes another 1/2 hour to find. Interestingly, this article highly discourages someone with a zombie bite avoid anything that may cause drowsiness, like certain medications (such as many allergy medications) or listening to political speeches. 3 hoursSearching takes time, especially with a slow connection. You lose 6 1/2 hours. 0:30 left • Done with all three - time to pull results together
The Cure The following were suggested in your research findings: • garlic • allergy medicine • acetaminophen • Penny Bun mushroom • antibiotic ointment • penicillin • American Black Duck eggs • pecan nuts You decide to eliminate the allergy medicine because the one article seemed very opposed to it (and the writer was a medical doctor...you have no idea who wrote the web page mentioning the allergy medicine). You have easy access to the following: acetaminophen is in your first aid kit antibiotic ointment is in your first aid kit pecan nuts are in a bag of trail mix you have You use all of these cures right away.
The others involve some hunting in the woods. Good thing you saved sites with pictures. You manage to find the following: A small pond with a nesting American Black Duck. You swipe an egg, but get another bite (hopefully you won't turn into a duck...or worse, a zombie duck). You find some mushrooms and they match the picture. You search and search but have no luck finding garlic and where in the world will you find penicillin?
You finally stumble out of the woods and find an abandoned camp. You go into the first cabin and find no phone, but some moldy garlic bread left on the counter. You remember hearing penicillin had its origins in bread mold. You use a frying pan you found in the cabin to make a mushroom omelet with the duck egg you found and have a side of moldy garlic bread. Yum. All of this took 5 hours. You're exhausted. You lay down to sleep on a musty-smelling mattress. A few hours later, you wake up.... Continue
It took you more than 24 hours to find a cure... You wake up in a few hours craving braaaaaaaaaaaains. You go off in search of some. Perhaps some nice owl braaaaains. Have another go!
It took you less than 24 hours... You wake up 6 hours later craving braaaaaaaaaaaan. Notice no “i.” You feel better and make your way back to civilization. Have another go! Used with permission from Ohio State University: http://liblearn.osu.edu/
