Welcome class of 2014 The year so far… changes? Let me know if…. IB exam registration forms for T3 What to expect next October.
C.A.S. • What is CAS? • CAS is EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING • CAS is DOING!
What is CAS? The opportunity to help an individual in order to allow student to develop IB Learner Profile qualities. • Inquirers • Knowledgeable • Thinkers • Communicators • Principled • Open-minded • Caring • Risk-takers • Balanced • Reflective
What is CAS? • CREATIVITY To be able to utilise resources to make something beautiful in order to make people feel good! • ACTION To be able to take initiative in order to improve your physical well being in order to be able to better help others to feel good! • SERVICE To actively and creatively help other people feel good about themselves and the environment they live in!
C reativityis interpreted as imaginatively as possible to cover a wide range of arts and other activities and to include creativity by the individual student in designing and carrying out service projects.
A ctioncan include participation in expeditions, individual and team sports and physical training; it can also include carrying out creative and service projects as well as training for service.
S erviceis community or social service; it can include environmental and international projects. It may include helping children with special needs, visiting hospitals, working with refugees or homeless people
What is GOOD CAS?????? Good CAS is when the activities are: • Involving • Challenging • Novel • Lead to personal development
The most rewarding CAS often involves: *One or two projects that are each a combination of Creativity, Action and Service
What is GOOD CAS? Good CAS MUST allow the person doing it, the STUDENT, to DEVELOP through: • EXPERIENCE, and more importantly • REFLECTION!
WHAT IS NOT CAS? • Paid work • Bookkeeping • Logistics • Self promotion • Boring • Indifferent • Neutral
WHAT IS NOT CAS?Will this activity or project result in a grade, points, or credit in a class? Writing poetry for personal growth will not count if the poetry is handed in to a teacher for a grade or points.
Are you doing this activity for the sole purpose of fulfilling CAS requirements?Be careful. Remember that the spirit behind CAS is that you learn about yourself or others through the activity.
Recording CAS • What do you need to do ? • Reflect • How many times must you reflect? • Eight times total during grade 11 and 12. • When do you write reflections? • During Advisory classes and on your own
Reflection Writing is not the only possible outcome of reflection. Students can present their activities orally to peers, parents or outsiders and record this experience. They can make scrapbooks, photo essays, videos/DVDs or weblogs. Students can use journals or make up varied portfolios.
Recording and reporting There should be consultations between each student and a CAS Advisor where the student’s progress is discussed and appropriate encouragement and advice is given. These consultations should be briefly documented on the CAS form. If any concerns arise, the IB coordinator and the parents should be notified at the earliest opportunity. All eight Learning Outcomes must be addressed in student reflections at least once during the T3 and4 year.
Think of one of your CAS activities: Let’s see how to construct a reflection.
CAS 8 Learning Outcomes • increased awareness of students own strengths and areas of growth • undertaken new challenges • planned and initiated activities • worked collaboratively with others At least one project, involving collaboration and the integration of at least two of creativity, action andservice, is required.
CAS Learning Outcomes cont… • shown perseverance and commitment in their activities • engaged with issues of global importance • consider the ethical implications of their actions • developed new skills
CAS Oversight by IBO UNIS is required to submit sample student CAS records to the regional office ( IBA). The records required will be: • A Summary form and the UNIS IB Office sends a completion form • Up to 8 sample pages from the student’s ongoing documentation. Documentation must include a List of the principal activities undertaken Evidence of both planning and reflection.
A Project as part of CAS For one or more activities, it must be possible for the reader to tell >what happened, >why it happened, >how it happened, >what its value was and >what the student learned from it.
So how will CAS proceed…? Each CAS Advisory period will be assigned a task. Discussion of student activities is basis for CAS Advisory period. Task will mostly be writing/ creating a reflection based on one learning outcome. Samples of reflections based on learning outcomes can be read in class
