Environmental Protection Agency • The White House and Congress established the EPA in response to the growing public demand for cleaner water, air and land. • Task of the EPA: • Repair the damage already done to the natural environment • Establish new criteria to guide Americans in making a cleaner environment a reality.

Carter’s Policies • J. Carter • Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act • Protected more than 100 million acres of land & doubled the size of the nation’s park & wildlife refuge system
Carter continued… • 3-Mile Island • Love Canal, NY • Environmental disaster • Long-buried chemicals began seeping up through the ground • Exposure was linked to high rates of birth defects

IPCC • The U.N. formed a group of scientists called the International Panel on Climate Change, or IPCC. • The IPCC meets every few years to review the latest scientific findings & write a report summarizing all that is known about global warming. • Each report represents a consensus, or agreement, among hundreds of leading scientists. • To Do: Why is it important that an international group of scientists meet to discuss environmental issues?
