VLT Plans • CRIRES(~TMT NIRES): 1-5mu, AO fed, R=100,000 2006 • X-shooter: 300-2500nm, slits & IFU, R~5000 2008Q1 • Yepun gets an adaptive secondary and 4 LGS and becomes a “GLAO telescope” in 2012 • Hawk-I: 7.5’*7.5’ NIR imager 2007; GLAO fed in 2012 • MUSE: 100,000pix IFU with 1’*1’ field, 24 (4K*4K) spectrographs, R~3000, 0.5-1 micron. 2011 • KMOS: 0.8-2.5mu, 24 dIFU, 7’ diam field, R 3500 2010 • SPHERE: ExAO planet finder 2011 TMT.IAO.PRE.06.044.REL01
Other 8-10m Competition • Keck MOSFIRE: NIR, R~3000, 7’ diameter field, ~100 movable slits 2009 • Gemini Flamingos 2, NIR MOS(masks), R~1000-3000, 6*2’ field, also works with MCAO, 2’ field 2007 • Subaru MOIRCS: NIR MOS (masks), R~500-3000, 4’*7’ field 2006 • Gemini “NIRES” - high sp resolution, PRV part of HRNIRS - 2011? • Gemini GPI; Subaru HiCIAO: ExAO planet finders 2011 • Subaru FMOS: 400 fibers, J&H, 30’ field 2007 • Gemini/Subaru WFMOS: 4500fibres, 1.5deg, R~3-40,000 2015?? • Gemini GLAO: largely comes as part of upgrade to secondaries and ISS ?timescale? • 10’ diameter “wide field” • for NIR imager and dIFU (same as VLT) • But feeds all existing instruments too TMT.IAO.PRE.06.044.REL01

Competition Comments • VLT, Gemini (and LBT) expect to have adaptive secondaries & AO well before 2016 • GMT and E-ELT are both designing in adaptive mirrors • => TMT will be less competitive for wide field science, especially in NIR • Impacts WFOS science for wavelengths > 0.6microns • => similarly, without an AO feed, HROS will lose competitive edge for > 0.6microns • Europeans also believe “HROS” should have higher spectral resolution and aim for higher velocity precision TMT.IAO.PRE.06.044.REL01
Competition Summary • TMTs biggest gains will be in the UV-V for seeing limited instruments, and with diffraction-limited instruments until an AM2 becomes available. TMT.IAO.PRE.06.044.REL01
