  3. Overview Overview • From Katrina in 2005, through the Iowa summer floods in 2008 and the more recent Georgia floods in the fall of 2009 – and all the major flooding events before and after these events, mitigation efforts become a factor! Add note

Mitigation Works • The Multi-Hazard Mitigation Council (2005) • Mitigation (grants) saves society an average of $4 for every $1 spent • The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) (2007) • Future losses are reduced by about $3 for each$1 spent on PDM projects, including both federal and non-federal spending

Mitigation Projects • FEMA offers five Hazard Mitigation Assistance Programs that provide grants to perform mitigation projects: Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Pre-Disaster Mitigation Flood Mitigation Assistance Severe Repetitive Loss Repetitive Flood Claims • Grants are administered from FEMA to States, Territories, and Indian Tribal Governments and then to local communities Add note
