  1. Kinetic and Potential Energy

  2. Potential Energy Potential energy is that energy which an object has because of its position. It is called potential energy because it has the potential to be converted into other forms of energy, such as kinetic energy. Definition: Potential energy is energy that is stored in a system because of it’s position or chemistry.

  3. Position Examples: Wound-Up Spring Baseball Pitcher

  4. When the position of an object is altered, it creates Potential Energy. When you lift up up a yo-yo, its position is altered. It now has the ability (or potential) to do work.

  5. Potential Energy Rubber Bands and a Target?

  6. More Examples of (Position) Potential Energy: Stretching a rubber band. -Stores energy Water at the top of a waterfall. -Stores energy Yo–Yo in held in your hand. -Stores energy because of position Drawing a Bow. -Stores energy because of position

  7. Chemistry Examples: • Wood • Coal • Oil • Gas

  8. How does “chemistry” create energy? Take that pile of wood. Let’s make a fire. So – How is this wood an example of potential energy?

  9. How does chemistry create energy? Imagine you are next to that fire. You get warm and the logs change from wood to ash (it’s a chemical reaction - remember that?) But how does wood have potential energy? Wood has stored energy that is released when burned. What is stored energy called again? Stored energy = potential energy!!

  10. Potential Energy Converted to Kinetic Energy… When stored energy begins to move, the object now transfers from potential energy into kinetic energy. Standing still Running

  11. Kinetic Energy Definition: KineticEnergy is energy in motion or the energy of a moving object.

  12. Examples of Kinetic Energy • Running • Wood Burning • Rock Falling

  13. More Examples of Kinetic Energy • Shooting a rubber band. • Water falling over the fall. • A Yo-Yo in motion. • Releasing the arrow from the bow.

  14. How does burning wood have kinetic energy? Back to that fire… When the wood is burning it is releasing that stored energy, that release energy is known as Kinetic Energy! Released energy = Kinetic energy!!

  15. Summary of What You’ve Learned… Let’s go through some ideas: • Holding bowling ball in your hand. • A coin sitting on paper over a cup. • Remember: Energy can be transformed from potential energy to kinetic energy. Kinetic energy can be transformed into potential energy.

  17. Kinetic and Potential Energy Together

  18. In your science journal, draw an exampleof potential energy transferring to kinetic energy to potential energy. Label the potential and kinetic energy points.

  19. Relationship between Motion & Potential/Kinetic Energy

  20. Potential Energy = stored energy due to an object’s position • Objects at rest or stationary

  21. Potential Energy • Rocks on a cliff

  22. Potential Energy • Water at the top of a waterfall

  23. Potential Energy • Car at the top of a rollercoaster

  24. Potential Energy • Geologic faults before an earthquake

  25. Potential Energy • Pressure building inside a volcano before it erupts

  26. Kinetic Energy • Rocks falling off a cliff or rolling down a hill

  27. Kinetic Energy • Falling or flowing water

  28. Kinetic Energy • Car moving on a track of a roller coaster

  29. Kinetic Energy • Plate movement resulting in a earthquake

  30. Kinetic Energy • Release of energy through a volcanic eruption (gases, magma, ashes…)

  31. What causes it to move?

  32. Removing Forces

  33. If there was no gravity, what would happen if a ball was thrown in the air?

  34. If there was no air resistance, what would happen if you dropped a feather and a hammer at the same time?
