How SMRT is Championing Environmental Stewardship in Rail Transport The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) in Singapore is expanding and its usage is growing every year. With the rapid expansion, it becomes increasingly important to manage its environmental footprint. SMRT Corporation, the leading multi-modal transport operator in Singapore, is increasing its green mobility capabilities to make MRT a sustainable transportation system in the country. Sustainable Initiatives by SMRT The environmental sustainability initiatives are led by four committees of SMRT - Energy, Water, Green and Waste Committees. The committees are working together and created a plan to reduce waste at station depots by more than 30 percent by the end of 2022. SMRT established an Environmental Sustainability Committee to oversee green sustainability efforts. The committee added solar photovoltaic systems in trains depots to convert sunlight to electricity. It helped to reduce 1,800 tonnes of carbon footprint annually. The company is also utilising dual cycle recycling systems at train wash plants and saving about 670,000 litres of freshwater each month. SMRT also reduced the annual paper print count by 21.3% from 2019 to 2020. It is working on efficient waste management. Till now, 1,600 tonnes of scrap metal are sent by SMRT for recycling. SMRT has established the SMRT Group Sustainability Bond Framework to support new and existing sustainable projects. The framework aims to reap environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices for sustainability-related opportunities. SMRT has in-house energy managers who track its energy consumption and measure its Greenhouse Gases (GHG) emission levels. The data they gather helps them to formulate their action plan to further reduce their carbon footprint. ABC&I Sustainability Framework of SMRT SMRT has created a framework that guides its sustainability efforts. The ABC&I framework is: • Adopt eco-friendly resources, alternative energy and environmental solutions • Benchmark and measure environmental performance • Cultivate values, create environmental awareness • & Improve processes with the implementation of the Environmental Management System “As a responsible steward of the environment, we continue to strengthen our green mobility capabilities to bring value to all our stakeholders and support the Government’s vision of a car-lite nation,” said Seah Moon Ming, SMRT Chairman.
