  1. How is an Internet Connection Provided on Cruise Ships? Enjoying a holiday aboard a cruise ship can be a memorable experience. However, apart from the luxurious amenities that a cruise ship offers, having an internet connection on ships has also become a necessary part of the equation. As an essential part of our lives, the internet allows us to stay in touch with friends and family, as well as get updates on current affairs happening around the world. It gives us access to different forms of entertainment such as music, videos, etc., and it allows us to remain updated on our various social media platforms. Therefore, having access to the internet aboard a ship can sometimes be the deciding factor on which cruise to take. Realising the need of the internet connection on ships, shipping companies are subscribing to plans offered by companies that makes the internet available at sea. Maritime satellite communications has made internet available on ships. Providing internet on ships is not the same as providing it on land because you are out on water where poles or network towers cannot be constructed. Read the sections below to understand how: 1. Satellite connections The most common way of providing internet services on ships is through satellites. Hardware is installed on the ship which enables it to create a connection with the satellite. Thus, easy access to the internet via maritime satellite communications can be provided to everyone on ships. Hardware installation is required so that the internet signals can be tapped and continuous connectivity can be offered to the people onboard. The charges for hardware installation vary from company to company and the setup selection depends on factors such as ship size, intended usage, and desired speeds. 2. Wireless devices Some people prefer to buy their own maritime internet device for internet accessibility. However, it doesn’t work as well as these devices can access internet only when near to ports as connectivity is only easily available there. Many internet providers also offer data cards which can be connected directly to the computing system. Data cards also come with the limitation of being highly productive only when close the sea ports and offering minimal connectivity with reduced bandwidth out at sea. 3. Dial-ups Another way to provide internet on cruise ships is via a phone dial-up connection. Here, the phone acts as a modem to access the internet connection directly from satellite but loss of signal can hamper its efficiency. As such, it is not a reliable source as it depends heavily on the phone’s signal reception. Explore the web to access more information on advantages of having maritime internet on ships and how to choose the best internet connectivity option out of all the available ones.
