  4. Core Skills The 5 pillars: • Phonetic awareness • Phonics • Fluency • Vocabulary • Comprehension

  5. Complex Thinking • Understanding Written text • Developing and interpreting meaning • Using meaning as appropriate to type of text, purpose and situation.

  6. Teacher’s Role • Planning, collecting, interpreting, and using reading assessment on a regular basis. • Through observing, listening and careful questioning, the teacher is able to gather information about her students as readers.

  7. Formative and Summative Formative Ongoing daily process to understand students’ accomplishments and challenges. (IRI) Summative High stakes, end of quarter, end of unit tests.

  8. Assessment is evolving Reading is no longer just a traditional print-based endeavor. Students now encounter the following: • Print • Electronic text • Hypertexts • Graphics • Pictures • Embedded videos • Audio
