Circle of Life PURITY BIRTH INFACY EAST SPRING WEST AUTUMN UNSELFISHNESS TWO LEGGED ADULTHOOD VEGETABLES CONTROL SWIMMERS WIND FLOWERS BALANCE MOON FIRE LOVE SUN CREATOR
Traditional First Nations Spirituality • This is the circle in hierarchal form • Each depends on order above or at the same level for survival. • Everything in the natural world has a spirit. • Some nations have the Earth, Sun, Moon, Stars at a level next to the Creator
TRADITIONAL FN PERSPECTIVE OF THE PHYSICAL WORLD • This is the spirit world • Everything in the natural world has a spirit • This spirit world is the connection to the Creator • Everything is a gift to be shared • There is no ownership of these gifts • Creator and man are also spirit beings • EARTH/FIRE/AIR/WATER • PLANT LIFE • INSECT WORLD • SWIMMERS/FLYERS • FOUR-LEGGED/TWO-LEGGED
Contemporary View • We as humans, seem to place ourselves above creation!! • Sometimes even above God/Creator • Forgetting the basic FN belief that everything in the natural world has a spirit. • Where we place ourselves determines how we relate to Creation
Sayings of the Elders • “Our people respected the Creator’s beings, and as a result, on our long history of dominance on this continent, none of the animals we hunted ever became extinct.” Chief John Snow, Wesley Band, Stoney Nation
Spiritual Beliefs:This visual represents the perspective of the plains First Nations to human activity and knowledge. Spiritual Beliefs “Religion separates people – Spirituality connects us”
THE SEVEN TEACHINGS • LOVE • RESPECT • HUMILITY • WISDOM • BRAVERY • TRUTH • HONESTY
INDICATORS • Locate indicators that correspond to this spirituality. • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the Traditional First Nations world view/spirituality. • Describe the advantages and disadvantages of the ‘contemporary’ world view. • Locate indicators where any of these traditional beliefs might be used to provide another ‘perspective’. (Note: It might not be mentioned specifically) Identify ways/strategies/activities that might deepen the understandings of the First Nations perspective. (Ex. stories, smudge, prayer, tobacco, etc.)
MORE INQUIRY • What do you think of this philosophy? • What ways would behavior change if people followed this spirituality? • Apply this First Nations thinking to earth, air, fire, water. How might it make a difference in our actions? • All of creation is spiritual, all of creation has been touched by the hand of the Creator/God. Try to make this statement fit your indicators/curriculum. • Identify the parts of the ‘levels of creation’ that might fit your indicators/curriculum. How?
