Grant and Sherman surround the Confederate Army • Grant around Lee in Virginia • Sherman around Longstreet in North Carolina • April of 1865 Grant demands a surrender from Lee • Lee will try to escape to North Carolina, but all routes were blocked • Lee is forced to surrender because he had no other options • Lee’s army is in poor condition without food, and weapons and no additional clothing
April 9, 1865 • Union and Confederate Commanders (Grant and Lee respectfully) meet at Appomattox Courthouse (not a literal court) where Lee would surrender to Grant ending the Civil War. • Terms of Surrender • Confederates could keep their horses and would be fed • No confederates would be tried for treason • Grant’s Point of View • This was not a happy occasion because Lee was a formable adversary • Grant did not let his men cheer the victory because “we are all brothers now”
Effects of the War • 620,000 Americans Dead • 1 out of every 10 Americans died in the Civil War • Most between 16-44 • Most men • Most lived in the south • End of Slavery (13 Amendment) • Slaves were free in the U.S. • Slaves had no job, education, homes or rights as citizens
Southern Economy is in ruins • We will talk more about this later • No communications system • No industry • No transportation system • Limited trained workers • Thank you Sherman • Hostility to Union • Lost the war! • Punishment for the loss!
