A new solution for an old problem…
Does your mine have this problem? If it does, you need to get the Ker<><Thob implemented into your roof control plan!
Ker<><Thob Application & Installation Process
Any steel pipe, stronger than the roof bolt can be used with the Ker<><Thob, as long as it’s inside diameter is between (2.125 to 2.6 inches for our 2 1/8 inch unit) or (2.25 to 3 inches for our 2 1/4 inch unit).
One miner can carry a temporary roof jack, a shoulder bag containing a few Ker<><Thobs, two channel locks, and a selection of pipe cut to different lengths. This is all that is needed to allow one man to repair several loosened roof bolt plates.
Make the area safe before proceeding to install the Ker<><Thob.
Install temporary supports! Do not work under unsupported roof.
Raise the loosened roof plate up to the roof and measure the distance from the plate to the flange of the bolt head.
Subtract two inches from the measurement to get the correct length of pipe needed to be used with the Ker<><Thob. (5”– 2” = 3”) pipe length needed
Select the precut pipe from the shoulder bag.
Set the split halves of the Ker<><Thob onto the flange of the bolt head.
Make sure that the notched ends of the split halves are resting on the flange of the bolt head!
Slide the spacer pipe over the bolt head and the split halves.
Start the nut up over the bolt head and thread onto the split halves.
Push the spacer pipe against the split halves to aid in the threading of the nut onto the unit.
Grasp the notched end of the split halves while tightening the nut.
Two Channellock Pliers (one 420 and one 460), and a tape measure are the only tools needed for the installation of a Ker<><Thob!
The Ker<><Thob was tested by MSHA on 10/3/96 and 9/3/97. Both times it was subjected up to 60,800 pounds of pressure with no failure.
