  3. What is ABC • As CARL corporation explained, Self-Check, as the name implies, it is a device with a set of software that allows patrons to check out items themselves using a ‘scanner’ to read patron cards. • There are other names for self-check terminal: Self-Issue/Return, Self Check- in/Checkout, Self-Check/Return, or Self-Service. • Like an ATM, a self-check terminal enables patrons to manage their own transactions. • The first self-check terminal is made in the University of Texas at Dallas in 1974. • 3M company started testing their self-check terminal in the University of Western Sydney’s Campbelltom Library in 1991. • There are some well-known companies that develop self-check terminals, some doing library-related business all along (like 3M, Plescon and Vernon), some originally developing library automation systems (like ALSi-Automated Library System International), and some only developing self-check terminals (like BTJ, Librarmation, Checkpoint, VTLS).

  5. Why need ABC If there are ABCs:- Long lines disappear and librarians are free from repeated labor and able to provide more creative services for patrons… If there is no ABC:- Patrons wait in long lines while librarians manually manage check-in/checkout transactions .

  6. Why need ABC (2)–ABC in Library Step 1: Search an item and its location Step 2: Get the item from the shelf Step 3: Manage the transaction on ABC Step 4: Leave after check out the item The whole process need no help of librarian.

  7. Why need ABC (3) Advantages of the ABC system are with limited human resources of library:- • Simplifying the check-in/checkout processes • Increasing efficiency and quality of circulation • Improving productivity and service quality of librarian • Lightening the workload of the desk • Ensuring patron privacy • Cutting the waiting time for patrons • Fulfilling high efficient management • Boosting image of library • Maximizing return on investment • Enhancing patron satisfaction

  9. Requirement Analysis Issues encountered using self-check terminal: • Security: Multi book detection • Operation: Easy to use • Compatibility: Kinds of magnetic strips • Use: Time cost • Barcode: Accurate reading • System: Communication with library’s ACS • Record: Statistics and receipts • …

  10. Necessary Functions • Communicate with library’s ACS • Provide both check-in and checkout functions • Allow patrons to manage transactions themselves • Support types of patron cards • Authenticate patrons • Identify items accurately • Display account info of patron and item info • Guide patrons through processes with text, graphic and voice prompts • Prevent patrons from checking out and desensitizing more than one item without recording the transaction in the ACS • Prevent patron from changing books during the processes • Sensitize and desensitize • Receive directions from library’s ACS • Receipt printing

  11. Necessary Functions (2) • Management functions, such as service mode configuration, transaction statistics, etc. • Provide APIs for librarians to develop user interface and prompts themselves • Remote system management • Remote software upgrade

  12. Breakthrough Innovation: Video Identification • Great challenge – Multi Book Detection • Detecting by magnetic flux, the success rate is comparatively low. • Utilizing video identification technology thoroughly solves the blind zone problem. • The success rate of the latter is up to 99% while that of the former less than 70%. • Fully automatic barcode identification • With traditional barcode scanner, the patron has to adjust the placement of the book himself till the scan line aims at the barcode and on-site installation is necessary due to each library may have its own requirement for scanner location. • Utilizing video identification technology, the ABC system automatically locate and identify barcodes. • The latter not only saves on-site installation fee but also need no manual adjustment by patron.

  13. Breakthrough Innovation: Video Identification (2) • The complexities of design, manufacture and installation are greatly lowered. • The reliability, security and convenience are remarkably enhanced. • The system cost is reduced. • The management and patron operation are simplified.
