In what ways does globalization create new opportunities for identity? • We have a chance to expand our identity. • We can explore and create an identity based on a much broader scope of understanding. • The issue of this chapter is to what extent should we respond to the opportunities that globalization provides for identity?

3. Accommodation and integration in Urban Centres • Urbanization has been occurring for more than 200 years. • Why did it happen? • Industrial revolution. • Agricultural revolution. • People began to move from the rural areas into the urban areas looking for work.

4. These cities became important centers of business, industry, development, education and cultural exchange • When people are in contact with other people, talking happens.

5. More people than ever live in these large metropolises. • People often move from one area to another. • This allows cities to flourish at a social as well as economic level. • This will cause cities to become more diverse and cosmopolitan. • Click Here!

6. People give their skills knowledge and labor and in return they get services that they enjoy. • This is only true if cities are willing to accommodate and integrate new citizens. • As a result, globalization has caused migration that affects even more the diversity of its citizens.

8. Accommodation • Local governments will try to accommodate and integrate new residents. • Example page 94 • By accommodating new immigrants, MISA helps people prepare quickly and effectively to become fully participating members of society. • When this occurs, integration often follows.

9. Integration • Because of globalization, integration can create opportunities both for the new society and the immigrant. • Some scientists say that as migration increases societies become more aware of the opportunities that can occur because of the different peoples.

10. People need diversity in order to be exposed to new perspectives. • Perspectives can be enriched as well. • Very few immigrants leave their country because they don’t like the culture. • Pluralism allows people to expand their identities while retaining their heritage.

11. Acculturation • Immigration is only one factor that increases the influence of other cultures. • People are exposed to different cultures which can change groups. • People will adopt certain features if they believe it will help them thrive in society.

12. This process is called acculturation. • It occurs when people adapt to a new culture at a speed and extent that they want. • This may lead to assimilation • Read page 98 on Susan Aglukark.

14. Acculturation in the Andes • Acculturation does not only happen to immigrants. • People who have lived in an area for a long time may decide to new ways of life. • Indigenous people will often use global business and tourism to prosper.

15. What are cooperatives? • See page 98 • In the Andes these cooperatives allow the women to add to the household income. • Women will work together in order to succeed.

16. Women will raise the alpacas for their wool and create ponchos, shawls and sweaters. • Lately they have marketed their creations to markets outside of their home towns. • See picture on page 99

19. Cultural Revitalization • This is an opportunity to celebrate identity. • Many groups have been challenged by globalization. • Some have taken advantage of it. • Heritage days in Edmonton

20. Read page 105 and the Inuit of Nunavut. • Revitalization is at work for the Inuit. • They now have their own territory where they can celebrate their culture. • The word nunavat means homeland where inukshuks are created and passed on to their children.

22. How much of another culture should you adopt? • Affirmation of identity. • Who are you? • Groups will affirm their identity by working out a space where language, identity and culture are protected.

23. How have the Francophones been affected and protected? • BNA in 1867 stated that English or French could be used in the debates and official records in Quebec. • Official languages Act in 1969 ensured that they

24. Bill 101 defined French as the only official language in Quebec. In 1977 it changed even how you put signs up. • Section 23 of the Charter of rights and Freedoms. • Section 23 protects language rights for French or English anywhere in Canada. • This allows people of either English or French background to affirm their identities.

26. The Global Francophone Community • Affirmation allows many Canadians the opportunity to create links with other French speaking people in the world. • In 1970 La Francophone was created to provide these opportunities to over 175 million people.

27. It provides an opportunity for French speaking countries to have closer ties to each other. • Many of them are former colonies of France. • In Canada New Brunswick, Quebec and Canada are members.
