Group Discussion Malcolm X Chapters 9, 10, and 12
Chapter 9 NB 34 • Skim through the chapter • Record 1 quote that you think is insightful and explain why it is important • Generate 3 discussion questions • Your questions should not be plot based (ex: What is the name of Malcolm’s girlfriend?) • Instead, they should be something that people can talk about and that people may have different opinions on. (ex: Why do you think… How does…)
What makes a good discussion? • Look at one another and address one another by name. • Build off other’s comments. [I agree because… Another example is… I interpreted that example differently….] • Explain your thoughts in depth. NO “I agree…What she said.” • Bringing up new points that haven’t been discussed. • Not dominating discussion but inviting others in who are shy. • Allow people to finish speaking before you jump in. • Understand silence might be needed to allow people to think and give them a chance to form their ideas. • Give examples that tie directly to the text. • You will have 10 minutes to discuss
In preparation for discussion tomorrow…Chapter 10 • With your group, skim through the chapter • Record 2-3 quotes that you think is insightful and explain why they are important • Generate 5 possible discussion questions • This is still part of NB 34
Block day • You will be participation in a graded small group discussion over chapters 10 and 12 • You will have about 15 minutes of class time to prepare yourself (chapter 10 should already be prepared…)
