Central Nervous System Brain Spinal Cord Peripheral Nervous System Cranial Nerves Spinal Nerves NERVOUS SYSTEM
PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Nerves from the central nervous system that connect it to other body parts
CRANIAL NERVES Nerves of the head and neck
Cranial Nerves • 12 Pairs • Arise from brain stem • Motor and sensory functions
IDENTIFY NERVE • DESCRIBE FUNCTION • REVIEW HOW TO EVALUATE FUNCTION
CN 1 Olfactory • Sensory reception and interpretion of smell
EVALUATION • Test each nostril separately(one occluded) • patients eyes closed • use a couple of odors • begin with least irritating(soap, lotion, food)
CN 2 Optic Sensory - Vision
EVALUATION • Test each eye separately using letter chart for visual acuity • Peripheral vision - each eye separately using finger • Exam of external eye for pathology
CN 3 Oculomotor MOTOR: Pupil constriction Raise eyelids Extraocular movements
CN 4 Trochlear MOTOR downward movement of eye smallest cranial nerve
CN 6 ABDUCENS MOTOR: Lateral eye movement
Evaluation of CN 3,4,6 EYE MOVEMENT
CN 3 Pupil Constriction
CN 5 Trigeminal Motor: movement of mandible Sensory: 3 divisions sensation to face and head
CN 5 MOTOR EVALUATION
CN 5 SENSORY EVALUATION
CN 7 • MOTOR: facial expression • SENSORY: anterior 2/3 of tongue
CN 7 MOTOR EVALUATION
CN 7 SENSORY EVALUATION
CN 8 ACOUSTIC SENSORY - Hearing
CN 9 GLOSSOPHARYNGEAL MOTOR: Movement of soft palate SENSORY: gag reflex taste posterior 1/3 of tongue
CN 10 VAGUS MOTOR: Swallowing SENSORY: Sensation around ear
CN 10 EVALUATION SAME EVAL. AS CN 9: gag reflex swallow water
CN 11 SPINAL ACCESSORY MOTOR: Head, neck, shoulder, movement
CN 12 HYPOGLOSSAL MOTOR: Tongue movement
