Inherited Traits • Inherited trait: a genetically determined characteristic that gets passed from parents to offspring and that distinguishes one organism from another
Environmental Influences on Characteristics • Things that can affect the characteristics of an organism include (temperature, nutrition, exposure to the sun, disease, injuries, and living conditions) • These factors can influence the phenotype of an organism • They do NOT affect the organism’s genotype • Temperature can affect the size and number of leaves that grow on a plant • Temperature can also affect the thickness of an animal’s fur
In some animals, coat color is determined by the seasons • If plants and animals do not receive the nutrients they need, it can affect an organism’s growth and make it more vulnerable to disease • Injuries can cause scarring • Disease may slow growth or development • Exposure to sunlight may cause plants to grow taller and healthier and can affect the skin color in humans and animals
Genes and the Environment • Some traits are influenced by both genes and the environment • Include: height, weight, skin color, and the risk of cancer • Inherited traits can cause some cancers • Other cancers are caused mostly by the environment • (Environmental factors CANNOT have an effect on inherited traits)
