Introduction • Everywhere we look, we see new and different ideas. • This was similar to was happening in Colossae. • Paul wrote this letter : • - To encourage • - To strengthen • The church from false teachings –which came from Jews and Greeks.
God directed Paul to write to help them be steadfast. • This church was not started by Paul. • Chap. 2:1 – Paul had not seen them. • Started by Epaphras – 1:7; 4:12 • Located West of Turkey.
A major trade route. • Many people travelling from different places. • This letter helps us see who Jesus Christ is, what He has accomplished and who we are in Him. • Paul gives solid foundation and confidence for facing the world. • He applies the truth to how we can and should live.
1. Christ Proves The True Faith. • People constantly search for the true faith. • We need to live by faith. • We live by trusting, having faith in what others tell us. • Jesus meets this need. • V.2 – “In Christ”; v.4 – “your faith”; • v.6 – “in truth”
Paul is taking us to the basics to what Jesus said. • John 3:16; John 14:6 • Paul goes back to the truth he gave the church in Ephesus – Eph.2:8-9 • The Colossians need not tolerate Jewish legalism or Greek philosophies. • True faith is God’s gift in and through Christ. • It is complete. • It makes you complete.
2. Christ Proves The True Fulfillment. • Christ makes us complete by providing the true fulfillment. • We try to find fulfillment through religion, work, pleasure, family, relationships etc. • “What is there in it for me?” attitude • But for Paul – true fulfillment is found in Jesus. • What are the results of placing your faith in Christ?
Christ provides us fulfillment by enabling my life to be motivated by His own perfect love. • V.4 – “the love for all the saints”. • V.8 – “your love in the Spirit”. • It is not sentimental nor natural attraction but the love of God. • A committed, vibrant, warm caring for others. • Romans 5:5 – generously poured into our core being.
God keeps developing this love in us. • V.8 – “Love in the Spirit.” • V. 14 – “put on love”. 2. Fulfillment characterized by productivity. • v.5 – The Gospel bears fruit through people. • In spiritual growth – “increasing”. • In service for God – continually bearing fruit. • Christ enables every believer to be productive.
John 15:5 – “bears much fruit.” • V.8 – “Much fruit” • V.16 – “chosen” • Apart from productivity, Christ provides a life marked by thankfulness. • V.3 – a thankfulness flowing from the heartand character. • Acts 8:3 – what Christ did for Paul, He wants to do for every believer.
3. Christ Provides The True Certainty • Christ provided us with true hope. • It is certain. • Titus 1:2 – “Hope of eternal life” • V.5 – “be forever with Christ.” • V. 2 – guarantees this certain hope. • Paul remind us we are “in Christ”. (38 times) • “In Christ Jesus” – 48 times.
He points to us belonging to and being united with Christ. • It was not a future destination but were already there. • This possession of this standing and relationship was guaranteed by Christ. • Gal.3:26; Eph.1:3 • Christ in us the hope of glory – 1:27
Conclusion • Have we placed our faith in Christ to forgive us of our sins and make us one of His saints? • He has fashioned us and will put the missing pieces in place. • Is this your experience?
