Be creative! Group Assignment: • You must first read, analyze, and interpret (torture) your poem in order to fully understand it. • Your poster should include SOAPStone analysis as well as details highlighting poetic devices in your poem (figurative language, alliteration, onomatopoeia, allusion, rhythm, rhyme, etc.). Don’t forget to answer the “So What?” question! • You can paint, color, or use collage to illustrate the imagery in the poem of your choice. • Be sure to copy the poem exactly as it appears, including the title and poet.
Poem Choices: 1. “The Legend” – Garrett Hongo (p. 472) – A man is shot 2. “I am Offering this Poem” (p. 482)– Jimmy Santiago Baca – a love poem 3. “Grape Sherbet” – Rita Dove (p. 468) – Mourning a lost loved one 4. “Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer’s Day?” (p. 494)– William Shakespeare – tongue-in-cheek love sonnet 5. “Ex-Basketball Player” (519)– John Updike – former high school basketball player stuck in a dead-end job ~~~~~~~~~~~ Hard copy (not in text) ~~~~~~~~~~~ 6. “In Flanders Fields” – John McCrae – post WWI carnage 7. “The Cloud” – Percy Bysshe Shelley – natural imagery 8. And 9. “Clenched Soul” and “Tonight” – Pablo Neruda – lost love poems 10. “Elena” – Pat Mora – bi-cultural struggles 11. “Dreams” and “Dream Deferred” (do both) – Langston Hughes
