We have completed a busy summer with camps, judging, the fair, and the Grade A Celebration. We would like to share our appreciation and gratitude to all of the 4-H members, advisors, and families for everything you do for our 4-H program throughout the year. All of our events would not be possible without all of you and we thank you. Congratulations to all members on their projects, placings, and state fair participation and awards. Keep up the great work! This is our last newsletter for 2019 and our last printed and mailed out newsletter. The Ohio State University Extension Seneca County Family Newsletter Volume 29, Issue 4 Oct-Dec- 2019 2019 Fall Paper Clover Campaign In conjunction to National 4-H week, TSC stores will be holding their annual fall Paper Clover Campaign, which will run October 9-20, 2019. Visit our local Tiffin Tractor Supply Company store and purchase a clover. The profits from the Paper Clover Campaign go back directly to the 4-H program. Thank you for your support! The Tiffin TSC is seeking Seneca County 4-H Clubs to help sell paper clovers. When clubs are present in-store during the event, donations increase by more than 40%! At this time you can also display your animals or demonstrate projects to promote 4-H and all it has to offer. If you club participates, you will be eligible to enter the TSC Paper Clover Participation Sweepstakes, in which winning clubs will receive a $100.00 TSC gift card. If you would like to participate during the Paper Clover Campaign, you can register online at www.tractorsupply.com/4h or call Joanna Sherman, Tiffin TSC Manager, at 419-447-4109. 2020 Fingerprints and New Volunteer Information Volunteers who will be selected for fingerprints should be receiving information in the mail. The list has not been sent out from the University yet but as soon as it is, we will get the information to you ASAP. As in the past, fingerprints can be done at North Central or any other location that offers this service. Reimbursement forms will be available as well. Anyone who would like to apply to be a 4-H volunteer for the 2020 4-H year must turn in a volunteer application to the Extension Office by January 31, 2020 to be considered for the 2020 4-H season. This is new deadline this year! After this deadline, they must wait for the following year. Applications can be picked up at the Extension Office. Fair Leftovers We still have several projects, senior pictures and trophies left here in the Extension Office. Please make sure to get in and get your trophies picked up and your thank you sent out to the award donor. This is so important to do! The trophies we have in the office are from miscellaneous projects, no livestock. Projects and senior pictures not picked up by the end of the year will be disposed of. End of Year Club Packets Club end of year packets are available at the Extension Office. These packets contain member and volunteer certificates, pins, and information about end of year secretary and treasurer forms. Any tenured volunteers who have not picked up their gift, these are also available at the Extension Office. Secretary and Treasurer Books and Honor Club Forms Forms for secretary and treasurer books are in your club year end packet. This gives members a guideline of what should be included in their books. Honor Club forms were in the fair packets this year. If you need an additional copy, just give the office a call. Books and Honor Club forms are due to the Extension Office by January 13, 2020. Seneca County Family Handbook In addition to the Seneca County 4-H Family Handbook being offered online and downloadable on our website and a hard copy being provided to all advisors, we are offering pre-orders for any members and their families that might want to purchase a hard copy of the Family Handbook. Handbooks are $5.00/piece and cash or checks made payable to OSU Extension will be accepted. Orders will be due by Wednesday, November 27, 2019. Order forms are available online or at the Extension Office. Club Officer Training There will be an officer training for anyone who is an elected officer, recreation leaders, health and safety speaker, etc. The training will be held on March 9, 2020 from 6-8 p.m. Look for more detailed information coming soon and in our next newsletter. 2019 National 4-H Week National 4-H week will be held October 6-12, 2019. On Monday, October 7th, wear your green in support of the Seneca County 4-H program. Visit www.4-h.org to get ideas on how you can celebrate! Be sure to spread the word about Ohio 4-H!

3. Seneca County Family Newsletter Oct-Dec- 2019 Volume 29, Issue 4 4-H Club Meeting Visits We will continue to do club visits in 2020. Eleven clubs will be randomly selected for a visit after the new year. The clubs that are selected will receive a notification of their visit. A representative from the 4-H Advisory Council will come to sit in at your meeting. 4-H club visits are being conducted to help support and advise on club structure and observe how club meetings are ran. This is a way for us to help you improve meeting structure if need be and provide feedback. Once you have set your schedule of meeting times and dates for your club for the 2020 4-H year, please be sure to provide a copy to the Extension Office. 4-H Club Audits We would like to bring to your attention that starting in 2020, we will be randomly selecting around eleven 4-H clubs to be audited by Seneca County 4-H Advisory Council. This will place 4-H clubs on an approximate four year rotation. All clubs that are selected will receive notification and more information in the mail soon. The audits will take place when secretary and treasurer books are turned into the office. This is a way to ensure all clubs are following the correct financial guidelines suggested by the Extension Office. It will also protect the treasurer, the club, advisors, and Extension Office in the case of any financial issues or challenges by others. Audits that do not pass inspection will require further investigation. Seneca County 4-H Endowment Endowments are a means of providing long-term support for the 4-H program in Seneca County. Contributions to the Endowment are invested, producing annual distributions from the interest earning in perpetuity- which essentially means forever. Endowment funds are managed by the Office of the Treasurer of Ohio State University, which in turn gives us approximately a 4.5% interest rate. For county 4-H Endowments, each county has full control over the interest income generated by their endowment. Donations can be made online by visiting: http://go.osu.edu/seneca4hendowment We hope to reach our goal of $1000.00 in donations and in return the Ohio 4-H Foundation will match that by giving our Endowment another $1000.00. Double the gift! Thank you for your contributions to the Seneca County 4-H Program. • Seneca County 4-H Open House • We are having a 4-H Open House on Thursday, December 5, 2019 from 6-8 p.m. at Sentinel Career and Technology Center for anyone and their parents and families to learn more about the Seneca County 4-H program and how to join and get involved. We would love for clubs to be represented at the open house for those in attendance to meet with you and get to know our 4-H clubs on a one on one basis. This is a great way to recruit new members within your club. Any 4-H member who has taken a project to the Ohio State Fair is welcome to display their project as examples of what projects are offered. Any club that would like to be present that evening can call the Extension Office to reserve their spot. Please spread the word and share this information with any families or youth that are interested or want to join 4-H. • Award Trip Scholarship Applications • There are scholarships available to help with the cost of some of the award trips offered through 4-H. The scholarship applications are due to the Extension Office by Monday, December 9, 2019. Scholarships are available on our website and in the Extension Office. • Color Contest • This year we are holding a Color Contest for anyone age 5-12 years old. Entries can be picked off and dropped off and will be displayed at the following locations through the deadline: • OSU Extension, Seneca Co. 3140 S. State Route 100, Tiffin • Tractor Supply Co. 2501 W. Market St, Tiffin • Rural King 2300 State Route 18, Tiffin • Animal Hospital of Tiffin 2765 S. S.R. 100, Tiffin • Ag Credit Tiffin Branch 2500 W. Market St, Tiffin • There will be two age divisions, 5-8 years old and 9-12 years old. All entries from both age divisions will be entered for a drawing of a gift basket. Contestants do not need to be in 4-H to participate. If you would like your color page to be returned after the contest, please make sure to print your name clearly on the back. All entries must be turned in no later than Monday, November 25, 2019 at 4:30 p.m.

Seneca County Family Newsletter Volume 29, Issue 4 Oct-Dec- 2019 • Teen Workshop • A Teen Workshop will be provided for all teens and parents who are interested and want to know more about how to get involved and what opportunities are available to them in the 4-H program. This will cover county, state, and national clubs, award trips, and scholarships. The Teen Workshop is for any 4-H teen 13 years and older and will be held on Monday, October 28, 2019 at the Extension Office from 6-8 p.m. There is no cost to attend! To view the flyer visit our website: http://seneca.osu.edu/news.teen-night • Changes to Newsletters • Our 4-H newsletters go out to all of our 4-H members and their families and advisors quarterly. These time are Jan-March, April-June, July-Sept, and Oct-Dec. Starting with the Jan-March 2020edition, we will be making our newsletters digital/electronic only. Therefore, you can view our newsletters on our website at: www.seneca.osu.edu under the 4-H Youth Development tab and/or via email. There will no longer be newsletters sent out by mail. We will have a few hard copies available in the office if you need to access one that way. By doing this, we will be saving a lot on paper and postage. • Mandatory Policy 1.50 Training • Volunteers, please mark your calendars to attend one of the mandatory Policy 1.50 trainings, 4-H update, and rotating sessions of your choice. Any active volunteers must attend a training to be a volunteer in 2020. • Training locations are TBD at this time, so stay tuned. • Thursday, January 9, 2020 6-8 p.m. • Tuesday, January 21, 2020 12-2 p.m. • Tuesday, January 21, 2020 6-8 p.m. • Saturday, January 25, 2020 9-11 a.m. 2020 Important 4-H Camp and Counselor Information The dates for the 2020 Seneca County 4-H Junior Camp at Kelleys Island will be June 9-12, 2020. Please note that this is an earlier camp week than the last few years. As a reminder, there will be no full camp scholarships given out. We highly encourage you to start thinking of ways you can save up for camp now. It could be a fundraiser with your club or saving a little each month. Scholarships at most will be half of the cost of camp per applicant if accepted. Camp counselor applications will be due to the Extension Office by December 9, 2019. Interviews for counselors will take place on December 26 and 27 from 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. First year counselors will be considered counselors in training (CIT’s) and will be required to help with Cloverbud Camp. Seneca County CARTEENS If you are interested in being a teen instructor for CARTEENS, you do not need to be in 4-H, but you must be at least 14 years old. We meet every third Monday of the month, except July, at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office and would love to have you join our team. Teen facilitators teach other teen traffic offenders about speeding, operating a vehicle impaired, and distracted driving. Being a CARTEEN is a great way to improve public speaking skills and learn more about teaching tools and not to mention there are gas cards and fun trips to Washington D.C. that you can earn.

5. Seneca County Family Newsletter Volume 29, Issue 4 Oct-Dec-2019 • Quality Assurance • Every member taking livestock (not horses or dogs) must attend a quality assurance training. First year members taking a livestock project must attend a county wide quality assurance session and a parent/guardian must be present. • There are four options for completing quality assurance training: • Attend one of the countywide trainings offered in Seneca County. Countywide training will be offered on the following dates with locations to be determined. All first year members taking a livestock project must attend one of these sessions with a parent/guardian. The test out option will be offered again this year only at the countywide sessions. Youth ages 15-18 years old who pass the test will test out of the annual quality assurance program permanently. Once you have passed the test you do not have to take it again These ages are as of January 1, 2020- a youth’s 4-H age. • Thursday, February 27, 2020, 6:00 p.m. with test out starting at 5:00 p.m. Location TBD • Tuesday, March 24, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. with test out starting at 5:00 p.m. Location TBD • Sunday, April 26, 2020 at 4:00 p.m. with test out starting at 3:00 p.m. Location TBD • Attend a qualified quality assurance training with/in your club. Certified assistant instructors will be able to teach quality assurance at the club level. If they choose to open it up to others to attend, a list will be compiled and members will be notified. • Attend a qualified quality assurance training in another Ohio county- fees may apply. You can call the office for dates and times in other counties. • Attend a qualified quality assurance training at an Ohio 4-H approved event. These could be at a clinic, Junior Swine Day, Ohio Beef Expo, Dairy Palooza, Champions Choice Lamp Camp, etc. • Quality Assurance must be completed by a county deadline of May 1, 2020. The challenge brings together youth age 14-18 from around the state to discuss community concerns and then work together to propose policies and programs to solve the issue. The team was made up of two teens from Delaware County and our own Samantha Hinton, Dandelion Dreams. Jenna Gabel, Blue Ribbon Buckeyes was also a part of this team and played an integral part of the team’s success. The team’s policy proposal was on the topic of biosecurity at Ohio Fairs. Teen Leadership Council Cara Brown, Blue Ribbon Buckeyes, Teen Leadership Council Committee Member, 2nd year. Her leadership skills will shine bright and she will represent Seneca County well at the state level. State Fashion Board Danielle Park, Blue Ribbon Buckeyes, has earned a spot on the 2020 State 4-H Fashion Board. She will be a great advocate for clothing and textiles at the state level and our county. The State 4-H Fashion Board is a group of outstanding 4-H teens from across the state interested in clothing and textiles. The board’s purpose is to assist in conducting the State Fair 4-H Fashion Revue, 4-H clothing workshop sessions and promote Ohio 4-H clothing projects and programs.

As soon as you turn 14 you can join Junior Leadership; it does not have to be by January 1st. We welcome any and all new members every month and we would love to have you join us! Junior Leadership focuses a lot on community service. The JL group goes on teen exchanges with other counties throughout Ohio, helps with project judging, hosts Santa’s Workshop, participates at the 4-H Kick Off at the fairgrounds, helps with the milkshake stand and puts on a square dance during the fair, puts on a club officer training and provides other fun opportunities for teens. JL meets every second Monday of the month at 6:30 pm at the Extension Office. Come and check us out! JL Fun Night- The Seneca County JL club will be having a fun night for all teens 14 years and older at Riehm’s Produce Farm on Sunday, October 20, 2019 from 4-6 p.m. Come on out and get lost in the corn maze with us and enjoy other fall fun activities on the farm. Fundraiser- The JL Club will be holding a fundraising event at Rustic Paint and Flair and Brush on Tuesday, November 19, 2019 from 6-9 p.m. Registration cost is $50 per participant. All supplies and stencils will be provided for you to make your own sign. Check out our Facebook page and website for registration details. We hope to spend a fun evening with you. Santa’s Workshop- JL will be holding Santa’s Workshop again this year on Saturday, December 14 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. This workshop is open to kids in 1st-4th grades. Interested kids do not have to be a member of 4-H to join in the fun. The cost is just $10.00/kid. Registration is due by Monday, December 2, 2019 and checks should be made payable to Seneca County Jr. Leadership. Registrations will be located in the Extension Office and on our website and registrations and payment can be dropped off in the white mailbox located by the door of the Extension Office. State Opportunities Carving New Ideas: It’s time to register for Carving New Ideas! This fall camp tradition is hosted by OSU’s Collegiate 4-H Club and will be held Nov. 15-17 at 4-H Camp Ohio. Members in grades 8-12 are invited to register for the camp. Registration deadline is Monday, October 28. This fall Extension has partnered with The Tiffin Seneca Public Library to bring awareness to mental health by hosting a series of events teaching individuals how to recognize and cope with stress.  We encourage you and your family to attend any of these events for yourself, your family members, and for your friends so that mental health is okay to talk about and ask for help. QPR is simple way for anyone to learn how to recognize signs of suicide, how engage someone experiencing thoughts of suicide and where to refer them. • Located in Tiffin-Seneca Public Library • Thursday, October 10, 6:30pm, Tiffin University’s Marion Center – Kevin Hines, Foundation Speaker • In 2000, Kevin Hines attempted to take his life by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge. Many factors contributed to his miraculous survival and Kevin now travels the world sharing his story of hope, healing, and recovery. In the summer of 2013, Kevin released his bestselling memoir titled Cracked Not Broken, Surviving and Thriving After A Suicide Attempt. • Q&A session and book signing will follow. Books will be available for purchase at the event. Drop in to the Library to find out about many ways you can practice self-care. • Staff from Firelands Counseling and Recovery Services will conduct depression screenings • Local mental health providers and organizations will have resources available • Located in Tiffin-Seneca Public Library • Monday, October 28, 8:00-5:00pm – Adult Mental Health First Aid Training • Mental Health First Aid is a course that teaches you how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illnesses and substance use disorders.
