What is the SOTC? • The State of the Corporation (SOTC) address is: • a speech • drafted by the Premier • delivered yearly at the AGM • that outlines for the membership: • the current state of affairs in YPM • as well as YPM’s future direction
Why give it? • The SOTC is an opportunity for the membership of YPM to learn about the goings on of the corporation • The SOTC is also a chance for the elected members of the Board of Directors/“Exec” to answer those who voted for them
About YPM • Established 1922 • TUXIS Older Boys’ Parliament • Started by protestant churches in Canada • 1st Annual Session (Premier: E. A. Armstrong) • Members were elected by other youth in “ridings” • Time of flux in Leg. Assembly: no parties! • Prominent community members of today carried the YPM torch for many years • Wally Fox-Decent, Bill Norrie, Lloyd Axworthy, etc.
About YPM • Incorporated 22 August 1983 • 1984-1999: Uncertain times • Corporation allowed to dissolve in 1988 • High turnover on Executive • One year, the PS to PR became the Premier! • 1996: 75th Annual Session, aka “The Bad Year” • The “Liquid Lunch” Affair • Led to ban on alcohol at YPM events (still in effect) • 1999: 78th Annual Session, aka “The Year of 36” • 2000-present: Renaissance…
