  1. An Overview of Sirens on Law Enforcement Vehicles What sets apart emergency vehicles and other normal ones on the road is the audio and visual signal emitted by them. The blast of an emergency vehicle siren sends across feelings of relief or doom depending on whether you are on the right or wrong side of the law. However, if you compare audio and visual signals on emergency vehicles especially police cars, the audio ones are usually more effective. You can hear the wail of sirens long before you see the red and blue flashing lights drive up to you.

It will now be seen in some details why sirens are such an integral part of police tools and how they have changed over time.  • Sirens used on police cars are either electronic or mechanical devices. The laws in the USA are very clear about the type of audible devices that can be installed in vehicles. Improper use of a police siren can result in stiff fines and penalties. 

  3. Police sirens are primarily used to indicate that cops are on their way to a call. Further by switching on the siren and the flashing lights they also get the right of way which is crucial in an emergency. Police sirens’ audio is not standard across all circumstances. If a police vehicle is travelling at very high speed, the piercing wail/yelp siren is usually activated. In case the vehicle has to get the attention of people on the road or a crowd, other types of sounds like warble, air-horn, piercer or whoop is switched on. Hence, those on the road can estimate the intentions of the law enforcement agencies.

  5. Electronic sirens are a vast improvement over their mechanical counterparts. These have circuits with oscillators, modulators and amplifiers that synthesize a chosen siren tone. Hence, police officers get to select sounds ranging from a yelp, wail, air-horn, hi-lo, pierce/priority and many more. These are then played over external speakers, usually in the range of 100 watts. The tri-tone is played to seek the attention of nearby people. The first electronic siren that replicated the sound of the previous mechanical siren was invented by Ronald H. Chapman and Charles W. Stevens, both Motorola employees, in 1965.
